Thanks. I'm assuming if I pull the starter, then that is where I will see the teeth of the flywheel? And what is the best way to rotate the engine? Breaker bar on the crank bolt?Sure sounds like the flywheel is missing some teeth to me.
I would pull the starter and rotate the engine around one full revolution while inspecting the gear teeth. Put a mark with a paint pen or the like to ensure it goes around 360 degrees.

But yes, if you hear a noise when starting its usually starter motor problem
You can unplug your spark system or fuel pump fuse, so engine doesn't start when cranking to confirm start motor issue
Or since you have a manual transmission, drive to a hill and shut off the engine, coast down the hill and Bump start the engine, so no starter motor
If there is no noise then starter motor is the issue
