I was eligible for a new set of hearing aides so I went and got the spiffiest ones money could buy...my audiologist suggested I get rid of the volume button because I'm forever sticking my greasy fingers in my ears to adjust the volume as needed...so they tend to look a bit grubby.

These ones have a remote...that I probably won't use much...but with the remote I can actually have a "hands-free" phone and it pipes the phone right into both ears...which I can then adjust the volume from the remote...cool!

Only thing I'm not crazy about is that they tune together...meaning they are sending signals through my brain tissue at a frequency that is, apparently, not the best thing for the grey matter...

They work the phone link off bluetooth so that is also is also hovering around my head...

But the sound~! I can actually hear my stereo as clearly as when I had better hearing...no distortion, no actual truck noises...which is pretty incredible in itself because my truck makes more noise than a diesel with wonky exhaust...and I can now hear people talking behind my back...:yahoo:...not necessarily about me...and the good news about that is I can actually mute both ears with the push of one button...so I don't have to listen to a bunch of lunatics talking about old TV shows or whatever people talk about...

Now, I just have to read about 50 pages of the instruction manual...considering it took me two years of owning a BlackBerry to figure out how to shut down the keyboard I may be missing many good features until I get another new pair in five years...or so.:icon_confused:

Welcome back to the world of sound! I've noticed my hearing isn't what it used to be lately. Tinnitus, the retirement package of old rockers, seems to be getting worse. I'm good about using hearing protection, but the damage is done. If I can keep it from getting much worse I'll be happy.

Wow! hearing aids that are worth more than my truck, but no pictures?

I lost mine through a combination of loud music, chemicals from work, and a predisposition to hearing loss...I was advised by an audiologist in 1979 that my hearing loss was partially due to the constant pounding of the printing press I ran...and that wearing hearing protection would only reduce the loss a bit...I wore both headphones and those ear plugs after that. The tinnitus is actually diminished by the sound from the hearing aids and a welcome relief of it.

Good point...sorry about the lighting...but I tried to make the image look like an alien...lol

This one shows the bluetooth remote...

Impressive stuff they make these days.
They put man on moon a while ago but now hearing aids work ??

Mark......not sure to congrate you or feel sorry since you'll be "hearing" (scolding, nagging, chattering, etc) the wifey all the time-

Well, there is a one-touch mute button that does both ears at the same time...the last set I could only mute one and had to turn the other one off...and that required two pushes on the left and a flick to the right...:icon_thumby:

Would it be rude to ask about what chemicals and how they affect hearing? Never heard of it before so I am curious.

I don't understand the deal with most of the guys I work with not caring about hearing protection. Even one of the old timers is nearly completely deaf and cautions everyone about wearing earpro but no one pays any mind. For me my vision, smell, and taste are below par and my hearing is the only sense that could be called superior so I want to keep it that way.

Worth more? It sounds like these things do more than my truck.

I wouldn't consider it rude, especially since it could prevent others from running into the same health risks. However, due to the length of time (1992 was my last year there), I would have to admit that I can't remember what they were.

It was chemicals used in the primer paint we were applying and I'm pretty sure these have been banned in Canada. I remember reading something about it years later and figured it was too late for some of the guys.

I did have partial hearing loss before I worked there, but my brother who also worked there had perfect hearing prior to his stint. He now has worse hearing than mine...but he is a musician...

We only worked there for 3 years and my hearing loss was considered "acute" as it happened in that period.

As for hearing protection...depending on the noise it may not do any good anyway. Wear what you can but find out about job rotation if possible where you spend only so much time in the noisiest areas and rotated to less noisy tasks.

I preferred the ear muffs over the foam because of the risk of ear infections (which was the cause of my initial hearing loss as a child).
