hand brake problem

Hi I have a hand brake problem on a ranger 1999 4x4 with 10" drums. I just change all rear brakes ( spring, shoes and drum ) I have also change rear hand brake cables.

Normally hand brake of ranger don't need adjustment. When I activate the hand brake It never put enough of pressure on drum to retain the truck on a small slope. I have activated the hand brake lot of times without success. other symptom, when I release the hand break, the pedal not totally return in initial position. It needs I pull the pedal to place it at initial position.

What is the problem.

I would think one of three problems:

1. The newly installed brake shoes need further adjustment outwards towards the drum to give both the wheel cylinder pistons and the handbrake device purchase against the shoes and therefore the drums when either is applied.

2. The handbrake cable needs adjusting.

3. Improper installation of the handbrake cable pin into the rear brake system during overhaul.

Thank you for your answer. I will try your first suggestion first. For the second suggestion, in all literature it is said that the cable have auto adjusting system. Is it right? For the third suggestion, it is pretty simple and I don't know how I can made a mistake on that but I will check the manual.

The emergency brake cable is self adjusting "in service" to allow for cable stretch and brake wear. When new cables are installed there is an adjustment procedure which is outlined in the Chilton's manual. If this adjustment is not done you may not get enough pressure on the rear shoes to lock the brakes effectively.

Adjust the rear brakes.
