gutting cats

Ive had plenty of motors pass withouts them. Its has more to do with how your motor is burning the fuel...the AFrs and timing and such. The best ive ever passed a test was a 86 tbi S10 2.8L with out one. The numbers foir idle and cruise were so low i was amazed.

please, use punctuation. run-on sentences are hard to read.

you can buy aftermarket cats for $60 a peice from jcwhitney. dont waste your cash on brand-name "high flow" cat converters...that all do the same job and have to conform to the same standards.

you can get a ticket if a cop decides he doesnt like the way your truck sounds, looks under it and sees there is no cat converter.

IF they ever decide to complain about the exhaust . They will just give you a hey fix it warning. My explorer sounds close to a turbo diesel. All i have muffling the 4.0 is a T3 turbine and a few feet of 3.5" exhaust. I have to drive thru several rural towns to get home from work. At 2am where there are cops posted up along the way just waiting to nab people. At one time I had a 4.6l 2v with; camms, headers, and dual 2.5'' exhaust all the way back that was it. In two years all i got was one cop saying "its a little too loud" I told him "yeah I'll put some mufflers on it". He said thats fine with him. Never wrote me a ticket even thou my car sounded like a nascar (literally like a nascar)
Thats why I like turbochargers thou because the turbocharger housing is like having a muffler. My motor is louder at idle than it is at cruise due to the turbine wheel dispersing sound waves.

If you live in a state like CA then its all a different story:icon_thumby:

my current truck still has the factory cats for now, my 2 previous trucks were gutted and had no noise or drivabilty problems. didnt help or hurt them. i did have a '82 faimont a long time ago, wouldnt go over 60. i knocked the catalyst structure fom the canister and it ran much better. with the housing still intact it still "looked" stock. it would be funny for someone to steal a cat that was gutted, thinking they could cash it in, only to find they stole a empty housing. would serve them right!

its ok I gutted both my rear cats and left the 2 forwards ones intact. I get an occasional CEL but overall it runs pretty good. I did notice the engine runs alittle weird. When I'm in a mud hole and try to go wide open throttle it spudders alittle but and I'm pretty sure its from the spacer I had to put on the rear O2 sensor to make it stop throwin codes every 20 minutes. I need to put a simulator on it to put it back to the right voltage. I get around 10 MPG outta mine right now.

and as for a ticket for loud exhaust....highly doubtful. the only way you'll have problems is failing an emissions inspection. other than that cops dont usually give 2 shits about your "loud" exhaust. its usually the other reason why you got pulled over.

and as for this....
its still illegal and YOU can still be ticketed for it.

and it still needlessly pollutes the air.

dude if your worried about polluting the air get off the 4x4 forums and buy a hybrid...also side note, if you ever buy a hybrid and I see it parked somewhere I WILL park on top of it

so you gutted your cats, your getting a whopping 10 MPG, your engine sputters when you accelerate, and you get a CEL....yet somehow this is still a good "mod"

im not "worried" about air polution, but i see no reason to needlessly pollute more than you need to. gutting your cat doesnt improve mileage or power, the fact that it increases pollution is just one more nail in the coffin. youll figure this all out when you grow up.

FYI, if i could buy a hybrid compact pickup i absolutely would.

you go buy your hybrid pickup and I'll pull you all around.

and heres your FYI, I might get 10 MPG cause 1 I have a heavy foot 2 I have 32" mudders on it 3 I am usually in 4x4 (cause I use mine) and 4 I am always pullin out hybrid lovers such as yourself.

ive got 31's, bad gearing, have a heavy foot, and usually have a trailer hooked to the back of my truck and i still rarely get less than 20 MPG.

EPA estimates for your truck: 15/19
EPA estimates for my truck: 16/22

10MPG out of a 6 cylinder is "broke". ive driven 460's that have gotten as "good" as 10MPG...but at 81% more torque and 53% more HP than a 4.0, at least your getting something for your money :icon_rofl:

Gutting your cats is illegal and we don't condone it around here. The original question was for information only. We've moved into unapproved territory.

So without my personal comments on the subject, this is closed.
