My '87 since yesterday has a significantly reduced amount power. It still runs smooth for the most part, just has much less power and doesn't want to turn any faster than about 2200 rpm while in gear unless I bury my foot into the gas pedal. Bad MAP sensor or maybe the ignition timing advance isn't working?

Okay, so I've replaced the fuel filter and the air filter and it still has the same issue. It actually seems to make it over 2200 rpm though it is still robbed of most of it's power, it just doesn't seem to exceed that in overdrive unless I really lay into it.

I would start by pulling some codes and see what the ecu is says

Had the same Issue,

TFI and timing, AND re-wire to accept the new push-start TFI module (got stuck with the wrong one, and couldn't return it...)

Get codes first, then timing check (with jumper removed, then with jumper in place, this will tell you if the computer is handling the timing).

Is it worse when warm, or just S#$% all the time ?

Greg

Okay, I'll see if I can get a hold of an analog multimeter and check for codes. You know, I think it's worse after it warms up... also, my other Ranger has a similar problem, a lot of the time it will stumble when holding a steady speed, sometimes while accelerating. It has a jerky feel like it wont make up it's mind whether to run nicely or powerless...

So, I checked for codes in both trucks- the jerky one reads that it needs an EGR valve and a Throttle Position Sensor. I'll replace those when I can dig up some cash. The one with no power, however, reads that the O2 sensor always reads lean mixture, but I replaced the O2 sensor a year ago. What would cause the engine to run lean?

Air (Vacuum) leak. could simply be a busted vacuum line, or a loose intake gasket.
