GT-40 or AFR185 ??

usually a little higher on carbed from my experience, i plan on a cam swap before droppin it in the explorer and hoping to run fast efi or quick fuel set up. It ran a 11.89 in my 85 notch w/3.73 gears and a C4.

Was that number engine hp? If so I completely believe it and misread your comment

An article that was posted in my thread about AFR 165 being bolted onto a stock 89 mustang block dynoing very close to adding 100 HP over stock with no other mods other than 1.6 rockers. I'd like to know how the 165 would fair against the 185 under boosted applications on a mild motor...

Edit- it was this thread, refer to post 15...

Yes engine not rwhp, i really want to see close to the 400 mark but probably not possible with these heads.

Did you go larger valves? I'm sure you can massage another 15-20 HP out of the motor..

Rangersvt undoubtedly both would fair far better than the gt40s but I would almost gaurentee at the same BOOST**** the 185s would make 50+ more hp. But Tp achieve same boost on better flowing heads smaller pulley will be needed on charger, which has been seen to be a problem on are 5.0 motors. Most Mustang guys doing the swap have found a 351w truck crank pulley and a small small charger pulley with bigger heads is only netting them 8-10psi, and have slipping problems.

Remember boost is a measure of restriction not flow

I'm not dead set on having to have to see my boost gauge hit 10-15 psi boost. In all actuality 10 psi is going to be way past the safe HP point of the block (way past 500 HP). The good thing is this is not going in a track car or dragracer, so its not gonna see high rpm (nothing over 5.5k, and rarely over 5k). It will definitely be intercooled...

Then I will be watching your build closley! Good luck, just sharing my useless knowledge lol

I don't know how boost changes things; but I have found Trick Flow heads to be a very good bang for the buck head. The TFS 185's may be a little bit more $$$, but I think they would run nicely in a 306. I would suggest upgrading the valvetrain if going with a high lift cam. I don't think I would go with the GT40's unless I was on a strict budget.

I would contact a custom cam grinder for your application and tell them/him/her your specifications and goals. Though, my knowledge and experience is very limited, so take this with a grain of salt.

Also, from what I have been told by many people, the stock 5.0L block's weakness is more RPM's than it is HP numbers. RPM's seem to be the limiting factor when it comes to an engine's lifespan. This is the main reason why I will keep the 5.0L that I got from another project and swap it into the Ranger. I don't plan on twisting it out much; probably nothing passed 6k.
