Nice info about the 165s, but that was back in 03 and AFR just redesigned the 185s and I was referring to those heads. I'm not sure the 165's will flow efficiently under pressure, guess I'll have to talk to their tech gurus and find out. Thanks for the article:icon_thumby:

Can't help with the decision there, but keep us posted on what you decide and how it works out. I want to do similar with the 86 I'm building, except I do plan to stroke it to at least a 331. Of course all that relies on my actually making progress putting it back together.

If you stroke it (like I was going to), I wouldn't boost it. Stroking it will put you in the 300+ range, even a mild boost will put you close to the explosion zone...

Definitely doing the stroker, if that's not enough then I'll add the boost. That's part of the reason I had pretty much decided to stick with the 331 rather than going to the 347. My donor is already over 180K miles so the motor will probably need to be rebuilt sooner than later. As such I planed to go ahead and find a better block (IE: 4 bolt stock or aftermarket (<<probably this)) to build a new bottom end and go straight to the stroker with fully forged internals. Build it once and build it stronger to hold up to potential future power adders.

Right now I'm just dreaming big, but I'm still interested in learning more. You never know when dreams may become reality.

I have a set of ported 40s on my windsor, honestly i would go with a set of pro comp alum heads, they flo better, lighter, and less than a grand. Just throwing that out there.

I've seen those heads, but being an off-brand name I wasn't sure about them. I know they are aluminum (lighter), know they have bigger valves (2.02/1.60) and know their cc sizes, but beyond that i don't know the quality or performance from them....

I might try a set and see how they are. Worse come to worse I can always run them in my other motor and run the AFRs on the Trac...

Yeah, I really like how the guy cuts through the heresay and opinions and goes for the facts. I read on another forum that the heads are cast in China, are based off the victor Jr heads, and the assembled heads are prone to failure (rings breaking, valve guides failing, less than accurate machining, etc) but if purchased bare and assembled in the US with quality parts, they are a decent head. Another off brand are floo tech heads, based off flow tech from edelbrock. They seem to be better than the pro comps, but I haven't researched them enough to validate this...

Its like when i got my gt40s i read so many people say that they were a waste to spend money on porting ect, just buy afr or edelbrock. But my .40 over windsor w/performer cam and ported 40s made 385hp on the dyno. not bad for ported factory heads i think. Mine are the 3FZE 93 cobra

Those AFR heads look pretty amazing. Makes me think of possibilities. I've already got enough fuel for them, and the 1.7 rockers. I wonder what the HP difference would be carb'd vs. efi? :D

I do need to freshen up the bottom end prior to doing anything like this though. Also would want to get a bigger radiator.

EDIT: But then I see stuff like this, and I think I should just get my P's massaged.....

Gt40s are a good stock head. And provide a decent bang for buck power. But if you went with anything but an afr (or trick flow) you would be silly, also aluminium will help prevent destination which can be a huge problem with the iat's provided by roots blowers. Also with a less restrictive head u will see less boost as stated, which also mean ull need less Boost to make same power. Which is awesome because you will have a chance to run pump 93. But as far as meth, I've personally seen two failures kn boosted applications cause by meth. Only thing I would do if it came down to it was e85. (Which roughly equates to 106 octane depending on time of year station and mix but that's rule of thumb ) the stuff is truely awesome.considering what it is. Just some food to keep a good discussion going.

Im not in anyway "calling you out" just curious as ti what dyno you made this number on. Most ported 40s are lucky to make 300 mark. As a matter of fact the FASTEST N/A gt40 headed car in the world runs 10 somethingand and only make 342rwhp on dynojet. It has over 100 hours in porting and thousands in the bottom end to reduce rotating mass friction.
