Grinding during clutch travel

I feel a grinding when I am letting the clutch out about half way through the clutch throw. It started to happen in third gear (the transmission was solidly in third and it never popped out of gear), then it started happening in second and first too. It only happens in those gears. Pushing on the clutch pedal doesn't seem to cause the noise, so I don't think it's the throw-out bearing... but maybe it is?

Any thoughts? I'm completely lost on this.

I recently had my entire clutch system replaced with the exception of the master cylinder. This includes the flywheel, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, clutch assembly, slave cylinder and brake fluid. The transmission fluid was also changed.

After a few months I started having trouble shifting into gear at a stop. I had to be rolling to shift into gear. The master cylinder felt fine and there was appropriate pressure and full travel in the clutch pedal, so I assumed it was the pilot bearing. that issue has gone away though, so I'm waiting to see if it comes back up.

Thanks,
Camelman

Turns out the mechanic let pieces of the shifter bushing fall into the transmission. I removed what was left and reassembled with a new bushing kit. The grinding has gone away. Might have come from poorly aligned gears due to slop from the bad bushing?!?

Actually, the grinding is back. It's coming from the transmission. Could a bent shift fork cause this?

Take it back to your mechanic and have them fix it. They caused the problem not you.

They're not interested in helping

if the grinding is when your letting off the clutch only, it sure sounds like a throwout bearing. Based on how the shop left pieces in your transmission, i would not bet they did a very good job on the rest of the transmission.

If the pieces of the shifter bushing were the cause of the original noise and now the noise is back, i would be safe to bet that your transmission is going to need a tear down and a possible rebuild or replacement of components. When those bushings that fell down inside the transmission started causing grinding, thats metal on metal, where do you think that metal goes? Thats right, right into all your bushings and bearings inside. Metal is not a good lubricator  If you can, i would pull the pan off and see if there is a bunch of metal in the pan. Inspect the easy stuff before you yank the trans.

It was the pilot bearing. Messed up during install by the prior mechanics. It caused the clutch to drag continuously, so the clutch was worn out too. I had everything replaced last week and was able to inspect the parts to see the damage.
