goverment sticking there nose were it dont belong again!!!

And it also aims to kill sites like Craigslist and eBay because apparently selling your (bought and paid for) used stuff infringes on the company's rights. (basically because they want to make more money selling new shit) it's all bullshit, laws like this scare me, and it'll only get worse. I understand that the government needs a tax base to perform essential functions but it wouldn't need the money it uses if it was more efficient and streamlined.

This right here is a bunch of bullshit. Goddamn politicians need to focus on more important things than policing the internet.

I think you hit the nail on the head. A lot of politicians (Not all) have their own agenda they would rather go after than do the job they were elected to do.

i think its time to invest in some 2 terabyte harddrives and get what you can while you can, if this passes, you can kiss the internet goodbye..

i think the goverment has better things to do...

The claimed intent of the law is a good one.

The issue is the way it is written and the way it will be
interpreted and enforced.

One of the obvious ones is shutting down websites on the mere accusation of piracy.
and that's an accusation by just about anyone who can get some government flunky to answer their phone.

It completely guts the limits on copyrights defined by the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
it's argueable that the STOP law does away with all the "Fair use" protections

It is noit argueable that the Studios want to kill or cripple search engines.

in short it is written like another anti-gun law.

You heard the example explaining the logic of how gun laws are supposed to
work haven't you?

Say you have drunken lunatics speeding through town ay 90mph
so what does law enforcement do about it? they replace all the 25mph speed
limit signs with 20mph speed liit signs.

Now tell me exactly who will a law like that affect?

And the only reason for supporting a law like this is if you believe the record and movie company hype about how much money they are losing due to "piracy"

As if it's anywhere near proven that an illegally copied work is equal to a lost sale
(it's not)

OR that piracy is as common as they claim (it's not)

OR the biggest lie of all, they they are protecting artist's rights... and in that case the record companies and studios are the biggest crooks of all.

Remember the movie Titanic, that made HUGE profits anyone care to guess how much Leonardo de Caprio has actually collected from the studio?

This law is a bad one potentially worse than the "Patriot Act", and does more for outright unreviewed censorship than it does to protect anyone.

And lastly it continues the trend to criminalize what should remain a "Civil" matter.

im sure the original idea was good and just, but as always, someone got carried away in the details. yeah i understand that people are losing money from royalties bc we download movies and music and software. But IMHO, they can go F-them selves, i doubt adobe is going to go under anytime soon because i downloaded Photoshop, i doubt that jim carey is going to go bankrupt because i got a copy of "ace ventura" and i know for a fact that alot of up-and-coming bands are totally ok with music downloading bc it allows their music to get out all over the nation with minimal promotion work on their part

I think if someone makes something for a profit and then somebody rips it off and tries to either market it as their own or give it out for free they deserve legal action.

It is theft. :dunno:

The problem is this bill allows the content creators to take down a whole site like trs for anything they deem as piracy including sigs, youtube videos etc, even a diy with music in it. No due process and nothing you can do really, it breaks dns which is what makes the internet work that's low level stuff.

I can see protecting videos, music and other items being sold.

But how far will this reach?

What if someone posts a photo on this site and I use it for an article. Nothing serious. Just a suspension photo or something for visual reference. Then, another website or person claims copyright because I used the photo given to me?

See what I mean? How far will this reach?

I think the government will eventually f--k over the internet. They're already going nuts trying to figure out how to get their greedy fingers on money being spent online and tax it.

This year will be the first year I get a tax statement from Paypal, since the IRS has gone after that money starting in 2011. I hate the IRS.

The problem is ANYTHING the content owners deem piracy is enough to take down a site period. This is way too much power without due process! I understand the intent but the far reaching consequences are not good. This affects every site on the internet regardless of where in the world it is located, because they delete it from dns essentially, its not a block it is a removal from the internet! This is crazy! I for one do not want the mpaa or the government to say who can and cannot be on the internet without due process or some method or arbitration.

This will be one more reason for businesses to relocate overseas. You think google or youtube are going to let themselves be removed from the internet? They'll just move the servers to Mexico or canada and continue to make money.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

This is also MY biggest grief.

I dont like to cuss on forums but this is some grade a high quality BULLSHIT!!!
The politicians involved with this SOPA and PIPA need to take a long walk off a short pier
