I gotta put a new clutch in my 96 2.3L and I'm wondering what's a good kit to put in? Should I replace the slave cyclinder while I'm under there? Now, I only payed 200 dollars for the truck and I ain't trying to get too crazy with it. Are the store brands, duralast and such, any good?

I bought a Luk brand clutch for mine...supposedly good brand from what I here. Never used a Duralast...Kragen or Autozone eh? I'd do the slave cylinder as long as you're in there...have to drop the whole tranny to do it later.

yeah, i think Ima do the slave too. Might as well. I gotta pay for it now though so it's gonna be the cheepest kit I can find. figure bout 300 dollars total. Hurray for having no truck for a few weeks. I'm figuring I shouldn't be driving it anymore, right? It really doesn't want to go into gear any more and reverse is really uh...not good. It makes a gears are trying to mesh and failing type of noise.

Yeah if you have to grind the gears to get it, you are going to start to damage the transmission.

I shouldn't take more than a weekend to get it done.

I was just going through this. Went out to the dealership and their clutches are the same price as the auto store clutches, all together maybe $20 more. But also found out that most stores clutch kits give you the wrong throwout bearing which is shorter than the one you need and doesn't disengage the clutch as fully when you press the pedal. Talked to many of the dealerships tech's and they run into this problem all the time and have to order one in from the factory.
