got the ranger on the road now

That cable can be a PITA to remove. Mine wasn't so bad because I removed the entire dash pad and had access to it. There is a screw under the dash that holds the cable in place, I think you could remove that screw, get it out of the speed sensor for more pull. Getting it out of the speed sensor, don't pull the clip, but expand it and pull the cable out. Otherwise you'll either damage the clip or speedo cable.

Should just be held in with screws, are you getting down to the gauge cluster or haven't removed the dash panel? The panel screws are hidden under the trim (then 4 at the top), the trim just pops off. Otherwise, the cluster should come forward slightly...

This is for an '88, correct? My speedometer cable ran behind the dash - down the firewall, around behind/around the gas pedal and was held in place with a screw. Then it went through a grommet to the trans, if you unhook, you could get more slack to get the plugs unhooked from the cluster itself.

Not sure if you can get access from under the dash to the speedometer cable (that's what prevents it from coming out, not much slack), but it doesn't look very promising. Like I said, easiest that I seen at the time was getting it unhooked though where the dash pad is. May or may not have removed the heater vent, can't remember.

i found something funny but possibly bad. when im in reverse the speedo turns backward:icon_confused: thats not supposed to happen is it

most folks dont usually look at the speedo while in reverse...but i think that giving that it is mechanically driven, it might turn backwards while in reverse. seen it happen in other vehicles, but not a ranger, my 99 goes normal way in reverse..seen that, but not sure about the older ones.
