I got ya 100%. My parents wont get one because they don't want a big one, lame. plus they dont want to have to take care of it. On the opposite end my dad had Four great danes, plus my German shepherd sheep dog mix. So five big dogs in all, and all out in the country a ways. Its nice have big dogs like that that bark loud at strangers and harass them.
The German Shepherd my parents have was the runt of the litter, he never got real big. But when he comes at you with his hackles raised, he looks 3x as big. Lil bit of food, leave him outside, it'll be fine. You could always offer to take care of the dog for them.
ummm I'm not sure about where you leave or where the O.P. lives but around here (both the city I currently live in and the one I moved out of) Having a couple of warning signs posted won't do a darn bit of good legally.
I know I guy in the city I used to live in that lost his house both vehicles and just about everything else (especially the dog which was put down) because his dog bit someone. he tried the whole "I have warning signs" bit and it didn't do him any good.
Strange... We haven't had an issue with it. City might be different though, we lived more in the 'burbs. Now we live out in the country and the attitude seems more like "ifen yew gott bitte, itsa ur own damb fault."
