Got my new hard drive today

Now are you installing just one 1.5TB HHD?

Hard Drives are like garage space. You can never have enough to place all your junk and projects. I currently run on 2x500GB & 1x1TB HHD on Raid 5. I'm soon to add 2x more 1TB, possibly 3x. And get 2-3TB of storage space. As is, I'm at 832GB used. Along with this, also Vista Ultimate 64-bit is part of my future upgrade.

My brother had one of those bombs with no hard drive at all, had to boot it off of 5.25 floppies. I remember him playing "larry liesure suit" for hours. Kinda like buying a $4000 plasma TV to watch the brady bunch...

Some of the REALLY old farts remember cassette tape drives.

And the first Apple II floppy drives that buzzed (loudly) when they had read errors. Kinda like scraping fingernails on the chalkboard....

My first drive was a 20MB. It came with my Macintosh SE.

Right now I've got 3x120GB drives in a RAID 0 array in my file server, and a 300GB drive in my main desktop box. It seemed like a ton of storage when I set it up a few years ago, but now I am shuffling stuff back and forth between about 8 machines to make it all fit. I am planning on upgrading to 3x500GB and will probably set it up as a RAID 5 array.

MAKG, I still have a Commodore VIC-20 with a tape drive :D

1.5 TB isn't that big.

Some of the old farts might remember when the first GB hard disks came out. They seemed enormous. My very first hard disk was 10 MB. My very first server had a whopping 330 MB "shoebox." With over 100 accounts on it.

And Vista is a huge pig. I've got a flight simulator running on the same machine (3 GHz dual core with 2GB RAM), under Vista and under Debian. The Vista version is unusable.

I remember a compter I built way back when. I sent my wife out to my local supplier for a 250 MB hard drive. She wanted to know how much she should pay, and I told her "not one cent over $259."

Man, you can buy whole computers for that now, with lots of RAM and a huge hard drive.

I just looked at my harddrive--37.2GB with 10.5GB free.

Guess I'll put off that 1.5T upgrade for a few weeks.

You have to understand I am a young dude who's got to have the latest in everything...

I needed this new OS to keep up with the Joneses. Next week I'm buying a hybrid.

:D

So if you have a Sony PS3, load Linux for FREE.

I don't have to have the latest and greatess. Sure, just over 6 months ago, I paid like $250 for the 1TB Seagate HDD. And way before that, $250 for a WD 250GB PATA HDD. Now the 1TB are down to around $100-120. I wonder how much they will drop with the 1.5TB breaking the scene.

Seriously, what takes up tht much space on your computers that you need more than 40G?

The two things I save in several devices to keep from losing it are my yacht design files and my writing files--that can't be replaced. I have about 50MB of drawing files and 20MB of .doc files--and that's a lot of damned files. I have what looks to be 300MB of family pictures from 8 years. I have 1.5 gig of video. And 1G of music downloaded from Walmart dowloads. And the rest is TRS stuff. My whole backup is 4G--it's on a harddrive I put in a box and attach to my computer with a cable when I back things up. The current things I'm working on I put on a 500MB memory stick.

A 1.5T harddrive is insane. I'll be dead before I put 1G of my work in storage.

I started with a Commodore PET with 32K ram....The 1 MB dual 5.25 Mainframe drive seemed HUGE (hell when i get on a kick and play with this machine, it still does!). Tape drive was the main storage method on that machine. My IIGS has the last of the old apple 5.25 drives..I remember the clicking...

I just got a 500G external and that thing seems just plain massive.

I decided tonight to wipe XP on my laptop...I have finally completely moved away from Windows on it. Ubuntu does everything I need it to.

Only thing that sucks is that Yaesu only has windows based programming software...Manually programming my new FT-857D is a bitch. Oh well... More time to spend on the air...

My Nikon takes photos that are damn near 1MB per picture.

It adds up fast.

i had an old old compaq with a built in monitor and keyboard that clipped onto the front of it with a 5 MB hdd, with 16KB of ram, that thing was fast, the my upgrade was a 486DX 33MHz compy with a 212 MB hardrive with a 1.5x cd drive that had a 49/50 pin plug that i could never find anything to fit, it had a cartridge to put the cd in then that went into the drive haha,

I have a 180GB and a 320GB and there both almost full. I have over 100GB just in music not to mention movies (which are compressed down to around 800 MB each) and photos shot in raw data (1MB or more each). I definitely plan on a few 1TB drives in the near feature.

Star Trek Original Series
Star Trek Next Gen
Star Trek DS9
Star Trek Voyager
Star Trek Enterprise
Star Trek Animated Series
Stargate Atlantis
Stargate SG-1
South Park
Family Guy
Futurama
Red Dwarf
Firefly

Yes, I have watched them all. I quit my job a few years back and drank, smoked pot, and watched Star Trek all day for three months. It was great.
