got a letter in the mail...

I don't think they should be able to do that cause then it would cause the police to profile people that have those stickers. and then watch someone older will drive the car get pulled over for something retarded just cause they have the decals. And statistics do lie because they don't tell the whole story. quite afew of the kids that died did so at no fault of their own from adults that think they drive awesome and really suck at it, slide somewhere and hit a kid. NJ needs to stop trying babysit kids and spend all that money to fix the roads and put traffic lights on sh*tty corners that no one can see around. but of course that would mean they would have to admit they are bad planners and don't bother to notice when corners suck

up here in bc canada we got a graduated lisening program when you turn 16 you get you learners "L" and the restrictions are you can only drive with a supervised driver 25 years or older with a full lisence and one passenger " family exempt", then after a year with your L you can take a road test to get you novice "N" and the only restrictions are the one passenger with again family exempt, and no achohal in the blood at all so now that i think about it we got it easy, however with eaither of these lisences you got to display a magnet with the corrosponding letter L or N or the back for the duration of the lisence you hold.

That's BS.

Now if I could only find my damn frying pan.....

hey scott...who really gives a flying hoot what the state wants you to do. if you are driving normally, not speeding, weaving, tailgating or racing out of traffic lights at night, who the hell is going to know that you are underage and not 40 something. i grew up in nj and held a nj licence for 2 years before i moved. noone my age at the time followed those rules and the cops look the other way except right at the beginnig and end of the school year. even then, they only enforce the rule in school zones. My opinion is just let the gov't make their silly rules. buy the sticker and dont put it on the plates abd behave behind the wheel. that is all there is to it.

edit: also, if the gov't really wanted to enforce that rule of one nonfamily passenger, they would make rules about what you are and arent allowed to drive. i have a 2wd standard cab ranger with bucket seats. cant have more than one in that at any time...see what i mean.

Why is the letter from the insurance company did I understand that right? If it's a state law why isn't the state informing you.Insurance companies sure like to buy legislation that is profitable for them.In California if they did that the stickers would be $45 not $4 I don't think it's to sell stickers.

I agree with that. When I got my provisional license I couldn't drive between 9pm-5am unless I had a job that had me working after/between those hours. I also couldn't have more than 1 person in the vehicle that wasn't family.

x2, it aint that bad. i had it the same way. i even got pulled over after 9pm one night, but the cop let me go. the stickers are kind of gay, but with the economy i can see something like that being put into effect.

my wife works for NC farm bureau insurance company and i get to hear lots of horror stories about young kids doing stupid shit while driving.
she just took a claim where a 16 year old girl was driving with a car full of friends, texting while driving, she crossed over the center line hit another car head on. driver of the other car is gonna lose the use of at least one of his legs but most likely both.

i'm not sayin all 16 year olds are like this and there are plenty of older bad drivers, just look at ALL asian women, lol (i dated an asian in high school, i can say that)

One of the problems with statics is that they don't include all drivers of all ages. They just give the ones that usually end in a death and was caused by the younger driver.

It actually surprises me. Most states are just "Giving" license away. It's a HUGE revenue generator. Just think if you actually had to earn it; take a hard test, take a difficult driving test and pay $1,000.00. THEN I would be impressed, until then, they don't care if people can drive, they just care if you can pay for their little badges and stickers that they say are required.

i know a fella that was a transfer student from germany, they have to pay over 1000 just to get into the drivers education/behind the wheel class. then it is a few grand more every so many years just to keep the licence

Ya, and the most common citation-able offense on the autobahn is tail gating. They fine people according to their ability to pay too. Wow, talk about fairness LOL. But don't worry, there are those that want to duplicate that type of mentality here.

What about a simple "three strikes" rule for violations?

Three violations and you loose your licence FOR LIFE!!!!!

That might make things safer.

baseball metaphors need to stay out of law.

That's strait up BS. They're probably going to do that here now too. They've been raising prices and adding in laws in NY. My girlfriend can't even afford to get her license, so she walks to work every day. Even if she did get it, the law specifies that you can't get your license until six months after you hold your permit, when before you could get a limited use license that would allow you to drive to work and school.

Oh, and we have new "Empire Gold" plates that are not only ugly as hell, but cost more than the old ones. They were going to make it manditory that all drivers have to purchase them, but since NY received ALOT of bad publicity over that they stopped. Now they're just handing out 56 in a 55 mph speed tickets.

the thing that really sucks is you can only have 1 person in the car whether or not they are your family. there was an article about a lady with triplets that has to find a way to get them all to school because they all cant ride in the same car.

read much?

That Letter said:
only one passenger permitted. If a parent or guardian is in the vehicle, this restriction is waived, and there can be as many passengers as there are seat belts.(The drivers own dependents, if any, are permitted at any time.)

meaning if you have kids, pile them all in there.
