With a gooseneck I would tow 8,000# with a Ranger. A trailer with a pair of 3,500# axles, for instance. Load 1,000# of tongue weight on it--that's within the capabilities of a Ranger. The trailer does its own braking, so no worries there. A 4.0 will get that going. I'd prefer a C5 for a trans though. The 2.8 converter is loose behind a 4.0, which if perfect for this. And it's able to be built strong enough for a 460, so this application would be a picnic.
Have fun driving 45 MPH down the interstate...and smashing it to the floor on hills and screaming at redline. Towing in at a gross of 10,700 pounds this summer with my truck was not fun power wise, try tossing another 2k on top of that. Essh.
