Hey my friend has got a 1995 sonoma 4.3 5 speed 4wd, and the diff is cooked.
we're tryin to find a new one, but we want one thats gonna drop straight in. there are 2 options available, the gm 7.625" (7 5/8") and the 8.5"
his is the 7.625.
According to the wrecker we talked to the same diff was used 83-97 in gm 1/4 tonnes.
anyone know exactly what i need to look for to figure it out?
THANKS

the easiest way to tell the diff is to look at the cover. if it round then it is the 8.5 and if it is some what squarish or has slightly rounded corners it is a 7.625. to figure out what gear ratio you have look in your glovebox at the service id label and go to the codes that start with a G, ie G80,GU6, or similar. take that code yo the junkyard and they should be able to get the right gear ratio. if that does not work, call your local gm dealer and ask the guys in parts and they should be able to tell you. if that does not work, just shoot me a pm and i will tell you on monday. any thing else let me know.

ps gm parts guy for 15 years, ford forever
