GM Vs Ford Axles

also to clarify the axle will be abused and worked hard. also which one would be closer to the same length of a 79 bronco dana 44?

Only the 4.0 rangers had the 8.8, and even then its only 28 spline. The 31 spline won't fit in the 28 spline housing. You can get an 8.8 from a full size truck and bolt on the disc brakes with slight mods. Since you have the 60 available, I'd really go with that. The 14b might be cheap and plentiful, but its an anchor, and did you know the hub/wheel is held on by only a snap ring? I've had a real bad experience with the 14b, so me personally I stay away from them, but others have success with them....

Not 100% true, my 3.0 edge has a 28 spline 8.8 with 4.10s.

But I do agree that either a full size or explorer 8.8 is better than a ranger one.

The 60 would be closer to your width, the 80 and sterling is wider by at least 6-8". I would go with the sterling, only cause you have it, second choice is the 60 for you...

thank you RangerSVT and everyone else who helped me out ill go to the junk yard and pull either a dana 60 or the gears for my sterling i found another posibility as well anyone know anything about the dana 70 and what trucks they came in an what years?

70 are in 85 and older f350's and dodge 1 tons, possibly dodge 3/4 ton trucks as well. Somewhere around the mid to late 90's dodge swapped to rear disc brakes...

SVT

how do you think the 70 will hold up or should i just go with the sterling once i get gears for it or do a dana 60,80?

A 70 or sterling would be fine. I said sterling cause you have it, a 60 would be plenty for you, 70 or 80 is just more beef...

SVT

60 or 70.

the older 60 ff is narrower and fit good

the reason i have dana 60's is because of killing 31 spline beefed up arb 8.8's not just the d35....which was getting hard to locate parts for.

300 plus hp sbf, and it was a work play rig like you plan to do.

no matter what get a full floater.

was the dana 70 a full floating rear and did they make it a from factory with a limited slip?

It looks like everyone has overlooked the fact that all of those 1 ton axles wont match the bolt pattern on his 79 dana 44. Also they forgot to mention that your front axle probably wont hold up with a v8 either. Better start looking for a set of tons

his 79 is easy enough to convert to 8 lug

yeah its still a d44...but 8lug flats are out there in the yards and just go knuckle out

they are semi or full....ls and open...355-410 were the most common i have seen in the ford vans...later have disks as well.

dodge old schools have a myriad of fat bastard dana's in them as well. pretty narrow as well.

thank yall for the advice i think im gonna go with a different sterling since the one i have has a nice hole in the casing i didnt know it had and i found more at a different junk yard i went to so they are plentiful. the one im confused about is in a 1980 f250 what rear is that ? it was a full floating rear. also i got some adapters off of ebay for the 79 d44 to be a 8x6.5 lug pattern.

That would be a Dana 60...

hey all sorry for not getting back to yall in a while ive been a busy guy lately. so i went to the junk yard and the d60 was gone but i still had plenty of sterling's to choose from so i got a sterling 10.25 with 4.10 gears and limited slip out of a 86 f250 it was complete drum to drum and its got no play in at all which i was always told was a good thing. also for right now im not gonna bother with the 4x4 conversion as money is getting tight but i can hook it up that i can drive it in 2wd. and since i live in pa i have to get a specially constructed vehicle title now since it has many parts and ods and ends off of various other vehicles. so its gonna be fun trying to get road worthy again. im not finished yet but im making slow progress. im still having trouble coming up with ideas on how to make or get spacer blocks for the front coil towers? if yall could help me out with that that would be great also pictures would be help full for ideas. i also got f250 shock towers and f250 shocks to put on the truck from the junk yard. i gotta modify the shock towers yet to make them work. and last but not least i was going to pick them up when i was at the junk yard but should i get 79 f150 coil towers or should i modify the ranger ones i have now?
