anybody here ever looked into the hobby, I think its pretty neat, wouldnt be fun for people who dont like being outdoors and exploring, its like one huge world wide treasurehunt game, wikipeida says theres are over 800,000 caches registered and in over 100 countries... what happens is theres tons of points all over the world, and now there are forums where people can talk and discuss and post up points, there are hidden caches everywhere that you may not know about(i was looking and there are literally about 10 within 2.5miles from my doorstep), and you can download the spots into your gps and go out exploring and find them, it could be anything from a film canister known as a micro cache, tubberware container to a ammo box or a bucket, hidden somewhere in the area, camoflauged or something, and in it there is a logbook, where you can write your name time, thoughts ect. with little treasures or toys in it, rules are you can take one of the trinkets out of the cache as long as you leave something of yours of equal or great value, or a sign or something in the cache and go out and find another, mainly about the hunt and exploration aspect, i think its pretty cool little hobby. and you dont realize how many people do it and that there are some where you live.

heres a forum

and heres a wiki thing for it

Geocaching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

after i buy me a truck and all, i think i might get me a lil gps for it, and have at it

edit: i think the site is down tonight or something, but i think its pretty badass, on the site you can put in your address or zipcode and it shows once within the area

I have done it a couple times with one of my relatives, it is very fun indeed. I pissed him off though because I found all three of them!! :D They can be difficult to find. :dunno:

I just signed up. I might go try one tomarrow. One of them is only 10mins from the house

I have gone a couple of times. I need a more accurate GPS I spend too much time looking.

Sounds interesting, and kinda fun.

This does sound fun, I just searched and found 5 within about half a mile from my house, with many more around town.

I have been a pretty active geocacher for several years, it is a great family activity. There are regional groups as well so look around in the main geocaching.com website to find your local group.

Interesting. there are quite a few in my area...

I've been considering trying it, as it's something a 3 year old could enjoy.

Apparently my neighborhood has been a hotbed of this stuff for years and years.

Something derived from it that sounds interesting -- if a bit risky -- is geoHASHing. They run a hash code on the date and stock market close (so you can't plan in advance) within a 1x1 deg region, and you have to get there. Somehow.
