i wonderd if you swap the gears in the rear end do you have to change them in the front and if not will it affect the 4x4 that much i dont really off road so i only use 4x4 in the snow

you MUST have matching front and rear gears. If you don't you will bnd the transfer case causing it to break.

Well you can used 4x4 with different gearing for short periods of time in low traction situations, but for use on the road in snow is a bad idea.

thank guys just cheaking because someone told me you didnt have to do you know how much it would cost for 4.56s

If you offset the difference is gearing by running different sized tires it can be done... but otherwise yes, what they said.

It depends where you look for gears, usually they'll run $120-150 new per set, plus $50-75 for install kits and the installation varies even more.

This can ONLY be done in VERY low traction situations, and when the gearing is close, ie: 3.73 and 4.10.

if its STRICTLY deep snow/ mud applications u can actually have radicaly different gear ratios, ive seen people run 3.27's up front and 4.11 in the back in the mud and have no issues for year, aslong as the tires are spinning and dont get good traction you wont break......

NOW, sayin that i HIGHLY reccomend against it, anyone that doesnt plan only using 4wd when ur in deep shit (literally) will want matching gear ratios, or in the case of most fords.... 4.56 in the back and 4.55 up front

I've known of buggies running totally different ratios and massive tires out back and small ones in the front, but if you want it to resemble a truck....

Gear em both the same and be done with it.
