i think this is the right forum, im not sure, there are a lot here hahaha

sooner or later i am going to fit 35's under my rig and i was going to upgrade gears for christmas. what should i go with?

99 4.0 ohv. deciding between 4.10, 4.56, and 4.88 according to the gear charts

any firsthand experience?

that was my original idea, but then one of my buddies talked me into the idea of 4.56

I have 4.88s. Was on 33s and am now on 35s. 35s and 4.88s definately feels like where it was when it was stock.

Some thing else to consider is that nothing is as aggravating as not having enough power to get through whatever you want. Lower gears are the way to go.

I paid the same for my 4.88's as what 4.56's cost. And like metalmac said, you are going to hate not having power.

good. now the question is whether or not to lock it while i have my differentials torn apart

Of course, do it while it's apart.

:icon_thumby: Do it. If you're going all the way to 35's and re-gearing, then definitely lock it.

4.88's for sure, I run 4.56;s on a ohv 4.0" with 33's and my butt dyno says Ive got the power of a stock truck on the 33's......I ran 35's on this combo before too, and it was slighty lazy...not horrid, but lazy.

You may want to consider swaping in a disc brake exploer 8.8 before pouring money in to the ranger rear. ranger rear is 28 spline, and the explorer is 31 spline. a bit stronger.....

4.88 's and a locker are going into mine. Going to be around 35" tires. And swapping in a 4.0L.

im running 35's with 4.10's getting around 19mpg at 65-70 on the highway around town well.. depending on how i leave the red lights. but i have a 4.0Lsohc with a auto.

4.56 for 33's (That's what I'm running)
4.88 for 35's

If your worried about gearing too low, just remember, you can always get bigger tires. :D
