My credo
it is what it is
my DD and travel ranger has a 4.0 with 355 gear sets in the axles. im looking to do a gear swap on it. i do a lot of highway driving usually with about 250-400 lbs. of tools...sometimes more (for work..all of which is held in the bed of truck). im looking to get more low end and keep a good mpg average when on the highway. i was thinking about going ahead and going a little lower than 373s and put 410s in. occasionally id be pulling a lite trailer.

any thoughts?

what kind of power gains can i expect from doing so?

If you're looking for better MPG on the highway, then going 3.73 or 4.10 is the wrong direction.

It's not the answer you're shopping for, but the 3:55s are going to give you the best highway economy.

With my 4:10s, I'm running 2260 RPM @ 60 MPH.

With your 3:55s, you're probably doing more like 1950 RPM or so???

If you wanna know how lower gears are going to effect your highway mileage, take your next long highway trip in 4th gear and calculate your fuel economy afterwards.

im not really looking for better mpg im just trying to keep it relatively the same or as close to it.

ok well how about drawing more power from the motor? if im going to be hauling 1-3 gangboxes packed with tools are stock "economy" gears going to be able to handle a load?

and yes im running 2000-2200 driving 50-70 in fifth

3:73s will make the truck more responsive and "feel" more powerful, with a certain mileage penalty.

If you keep your current gearing, maybe a cat-back exhaust might give you a little more oomph. Not that much though, but some.
