what would be a good gear ratio for a daily driver 01 4x4 with a 4.0 and 31 inch tires. most of my driving is on road, and if i do go off road its not into any hardcore stuff, just trails, and i dont tow very much.

4.10's would work fine for what you want. That's about the same as what I'm running on my Winter truck.

i actually have no clue what i currently have, the writing on the sticker is mostly worn off. what would running lower than 4.10 do for me?

check your axle tag. it should have the gearing on it. 4.10 is basically going back to stock performance. I have it with 31s and its like it still has stock tires. lower than gears would make it harder to turn the tires

Hard to say what he has as a stock rear end. He's running an auto so a 3.73 would work good also. Isn't a 3.08 a high rear end and a 4.10 a low rear end? Just opposite of the numbers? Think of it this way, with the lower number ratio, you can go to a higher speed. All has to do with the gear multipication thru the trans and rear end.

With 3.73's you'll go faster but it will be harder to get up to the speed, and you will be running lower RPM's when you do. With 4.10's you will be able to get to speeds faster but you can't go as fast and you will be at a higher RPM.

Not that your top speed is going to matter. you can still reach 75 easily with either gear. But A 3.73 will get you better mileage but worse towing and 4.10's will get you better towing and maybe not so good mileage. Then again you might get better mileage with the 4.10's just depends on your truck and motor. I get pretty good mileage with a 3.0L and 3.73's and 31's, I can't tow anything but if I keep it at around 2,500 rpm's I can sqeeze 24 - 25 mpg.

and don't forget that the diameter of your tires is going to change your gear ratio. just an example and not exact, but say you have 4.10 gears with stock 29" tires. change those tires to 32" and you might have an effective gear ratio very close to that 3.73. just another thing to consider.

you want youre general crusing speed to be in the sweet spot of the power curve.

what size tires do you have on your truck, and what dose your tach say when your doing 70 in high gear (over drive)
