im thinking of going to 3.73 gears in my 1990 ranger with the 2.3 manual trans i need to no what kinda of gas milage ill be getting and how much strain wll my drive train have. does anyone have any sugestions

Honestly, just go to 4.10.

If you're running a 235/75R15 tire size and feel like spending some cash, consider 4.56.

I have a 235/75R15 tire on my '97 2.3L and went all the way to 4.56, my mileage has actually increased from 3.73. Also a manual transmission.

Drivtrain strain from a 2.3L... ROFL (seriously though, no need to worry about that)

Yeah, the 2.3L doesn' have enough power to break an egg, it won't break anything else.

How it affects your gas mileage would really depend on your commute. Do you do a ton of hwy driving? Flat ground?

If you did a ton of hwy driving and you drive mostly on flat ground (say you live in the desert), then you may lose a bit of mpg by going to 3:73's.

If you do a lot of around town driving, then 3:73's will probably help a little.

In any case, I don't think you're going to gain/lose much mpg at all.

Actually my mileage was highway.

Did 70 all the way across the state (normally keep it to 60 for mileage reasons, but I wanted to get there on time) one way. On the way back I towed a 1,200 lb tandem axle trailer (flat deck - empty, 55-60). Did in on one tank.

Filled up in Fenton, Mi. when I left, drove to Hartford, Mi. and topped off in Fenton. Mind you I was starting to sweat a bit getting back to Fenton, but it wouldn't have done that before the gears.

When it comes to 4 bangers, do not fear the gear.
