gear ratio questions

4.88? Dang you guys.

You guys wheel your rigs hard (Hahns & Junkie). For the occasional trail rider & DD, 4.56 is about stock performance. You're really gonna lose top end and a decent cruise RPM when you start getting that high (numerically). If you care about your fuel economy (pshh!) and don't mind a slower acceleration, stay around the 4.10.

I will say that the 4.88 will be fun. As hypocritical as this sounds, if stuck with a 3.0L, I'd personally get that. I like a quick start for my DD, and I drive 100 mi on the highway once every few weeks. That's it.

I have no first hand experience with 3.0 though. Only three of the 4.0L motors.

The 3.0L will rev all day long on the highway and be happy. ATLEAST go 4.56!

With my 97 ranger 3.0L manual trans that is my daily driver, it has 3.73's and 31's on it. I rev to 3000rpm between shifts and leave it in 3rd in town 55-60 km/hr rev'ing at 2700 rpm.....it loves it. I can't get it out of 4th on the highway to save its life....so it stays in 4th at about 3000-3200 rpm and loves it. I gets dropped into 3rd at 4500rpm up hills. It doesn't bat an eye at it, and it gets good mileage there.

Gear it and it will love you.

People always seem to get freaked out about such low gearing.....I used to be one of them. Now I regret it big time....I listened to a bunch of old timers at work tell me 5.13's would be way to much gear with my 4.0L and 35" tires....so I went 4.56. While it is pretty damn good...I really regret not doing the 5.13's....especially now that I run 36" tires.

I geared my 4.0 L to 4.56. If I could do it again I would go 4.88s. With that 3.0 L I would have no hesitation to go with 4.88s.

Sasquatch hit the nail right on the head.

Though I have another vehicle, my BII could easily serve as my DD. It gets 22 MPG if I cruise at 60 or so (maybe 20 if I do 75). The 3.0L is not a lot different than the 2.9 when it comes to gearing requirements (infact, the 3.0L is probably even MORE comfortable spinning 3200 RPM for hours on end, much like a 2.3L I4 would too).

I always try to tell people don't fear the gear, but it seems too many old-timer V8 guys trying to say otherwise don't understand that smaller engines have smaller rotating masses, as well as shorter strokes. They can easily spin the faster RPM (and are more efficient doing so as well).

Points taken. I think it may have just clicked in my head for some reason. Mechanically understanding & working with small 4 cylinders, I know this to be true. Reading other TRS gear threads, I know this to be true. Count me as that skeptical, non 3.0L believer.

Will his 3.0L speed top out in mid 60's mph?

What are your 4th/5th gear cruising speeds with your 4.0L's then?

Pete

EDIT: Sorry, did not mean to:

With my auto in OD on the highway at 100km/h I'm turning 2100 rpm with the 91.

Mine shows about 2650 RPM at 60 MPH (2.9, M5OD, 5.13s, 35x12.50s... used to be about 2750 with the FM146 and it's slightly shorter OD gear)

Yeah a 3.0 geared 4.88 on 33s will have no problem whatsoever hitting the 95 MPH speed limiter.
