Gear oil??

i have the b3000 with a 5 speed and i put regular gear oil in it but then shifting started to get really hard and i had to drain the fluid and refill with atf when i asked my auto instructor.

Gear oil in a M5OD is just asking to toast your trans. You would be better off spending the money right off and put a new trans in rather than killing one needlessly just to put another in.

Why is it so difficult for people to understand this?....Is it because it says "Automatic Transmission Fluid" on the damn can?

Newer transmissions...Smaller clearances...higher precision... This doesn't ring a bell?

The instruction manual says use MERCON ATF in the Manual trans section in the specs.

Ya know, I think we should put up a sticky or something about this. Same question gets asked every few days.

its ok let them fry their tranny. i bet the same people posting gear oil are the same ones complaining on here about hard shifting and failing gears.

for those who dont believe the the owners manual that clearly state ATF just to make sure engine oil goes in the rear end right? and gear oil in the master cylinder? cool so i can put power steering in the motor..... gotcha so you think the people that designed and built these complex trannys are idiots and have no idea what they are talking about... keep believing that

ok thanks for all the help i went an looked for mercon atf and i just thought that it said for automatic tranys so i never bought it so what you are sayin is that even kno it says for auto trannys i can still use the mercon ATF auto trans fluid in my manual tranny? the guy that i bought my truck said he used all full sytnetic in my truck so im guessing even full syntetic 80w is still bad for the tranny and i should just stick with the mercon ATF aut trans fluid and put that in my maunal tranny kk

thanks everyone

ok so ill get mercon ATF for my tranny
just wanted to double check i keep getting lost with what everyone is sayin
so i should put mercon ATF in my tranny even know tho the mercon bottle says for automatic trans when my truck is a 5 speed standard???

For the last time, YES! The powersteering sytem also uses ATF last I checked too.

Basic run down of fluids.

Engine: 10W30
5 speed trans: Mercon ATF
Power steering: Mercon ATF
Transfer Case: Mercon ATF
Rear Diff: Gear oil
Front Diff: Gear Oil
Master Brake Cylinder: DOT 3 brake fluid
Hydraulic Clutch reservoir: DOT 3 brake fluid
A/C system: R134a
Cooling system: 50/50 antifreeze & water
Tires: compressed air
Window washer reservoir: seasonal windshield washer fluid
Battery: Distilled water (unless maintenance free, eg, Optima)
Zerk Fittings: Grease (whatever type you want)
Turn Signals: DOT blinker fluid
Fuel tank: min 87 octane gasoline

A few of those are obvious jokes. LOL

Sigh, why do people always forget. The "DOT Blinker Fluid" needs to meet spec Z87.1. Do not use regular Z87. You'll try to turn left and go right, what a mess.

:D

AHHH SON OF A BITCH, ive been trying for weeks to figure out why my turn signals dont work, apparently they don't take ATF, i walked out to my truck this morning and there was fluid everywhere...... That teaches me to read the label on my new set of blinkers. DUh

ok thanks everyone for all the help im really glad i came on to here to double check waht i should put in my tranny cuz i was just goin to put reguar gear oil thank god i didnt cuz i woould be putting a new tranny in, in a couple month

but thanks for the info

how about synthetic atf?

i've seen mobil 1 atf at my local advance auto. my truck has low miles but some years on it and its now a daily driver. i'm thinking put that in and never think about it again. i swear by synthetic motor oil why not put in in the transmission? its a little more munny but it is better oil imo

Go for it if you think it will do any good.

By the way this thread died a year ago
