I am going to be getting a bit of maintainance done on my 91 Ranger, it has the 4.0 ltr and the Mazda 5spd manual. Since just having had the trans rebuilt, I want to be sure to take proper care of it for the long haul...

So, what should be used in this type of trans, gear oil or ATF? And how often should it be changed for optimum performance?

Thanks!

Thanks much! I was hoping to hear that...easier for me to deal with. LOL

My 99 Ranger 2.5, 5spd grinds going into 3rd if you don't let the motor slow down a good bit between gears. My mechanic says it's likely the brass syncro ring giving up. It could run like this for a while. I understand this is a common ailment for this tranny. He recomemded synthetic to help but didn't say synthetic what. Any experience here?

He was probably talking about full synthetic Mercon III. I know you can get it from the Ford store and you can probably find it at any parts store. I don't know if it will help with you're problem though.
