gauge swap question

I have a 93 ranger and would like to swap in the factory style tach. Do I need the whole cluster or can I just pull the gauge faces out and plug them into my truck. I tried searching but it seems that everyone pulls out the entire cluster and then swaps in their speedo to maintain the odometer reading? Thanks.
