hey everyone,
92 ranger 2.3 with 5 speed,67,000 miles i'm getting about 17mpg. its running fine with no problems except horible milage. and today i pulled the codes from the computer and this is what i got.

code 157 MAF sensor Below minium voltage

172 HEGO sensor indicates lean condition cylinder bank #1

code 327 EGR(eyp/ept) circuitvoltage below minium voltage (Sonic PFE)

any ideas what this might be or ways to check these things???
i have checked the EGR valve and it works freelyand is not clogged nor is the intake.
the only issue with how is runs is a small problem starting when it cranks for maybe 5 seconds sometimes before it starts. sometimes it might start and die but then starts quickly once in awhile

I have to get my milage back north of 20+mpg

Get digital multimeter, and check the sensors directly. It's pretty easy to do.

Also, be sure your tires are aired up properly.

for 157 i'd start by getting a can of MAF cleaner and just cleaning the MAF. If it's really that dirty it might be causing the lean code also.

327 is probably a bad dpfe. i got one from napa that has been pretty good so far. the plastic ones are much better than the pot metal ones too. try to stay away from those. as for checking the dpfe all i'd do is make sure it's getting 5 volts to the refrence and if it is- replace the dpfe. if not, start looking for bad wiring or a damaged ecu. most likely the dpfe tho.

ok thanks for the replies,
i took out the MAF and cleaned it. the air filter was like new and the maf sensor filiments looked prety clean but i sprayed them anyway. afterwards it did drive a little better but i am still down on milage.
will change the plugs this weekend then move on from there.
goin to check DPFE and change the coolent sensor as well and see what i get next week
any other ideas????

fuel injector cleaner, RESTORE engine lubricant, new Fuel Filter, and taking your foot off the brake helps too... just kidding about that last one, LOL

well cleaning the MAss Air got me from 17mpg to 19 mpg but still needing better for highway mileage...
one thing i did notice is that my temp gauge is moving but it is just moving a little bit.... from the off position to the bottom of the temp range when warm. i know the cooling system isnt low (besides checking it) cuz i have heat on the defrost. (when the coolent is very low you wont have heat and will blow cold)
since the coolent switches are the cheapest i am going to change both of them tomorrow and see what happens. if nothing then the plugs are next

what about the egr system? did you firgure the code out? i'd figure out all the codes before blaming the poor fuel econemy on anything else. the bad dpfe could deffenitely cause a loss in MPG.

also the factory temp guages on our rangers are known to be pretty useless. if you really want to know how hot it's running install a mechanical guage.

ok i changed the coolant temp sensor today and will see if that makes a difference . i am kinda puzzled about it though?? from what i had read here i though it was located on the back of the block and went diving underneath the truck to change it. but to my good fortune it was accually located in the front in a tee fitting in the heater hose.
as for the temp gauge and sensor i am not in as big a hurry with those cuz they are more work and wont solve my problem
the DPFE is next on my list to check and replace at $30 followed by new plugs.....will terst is on my lunchbreak tomorrow
any other thoughts????
17 MPG with normal driving sucks!!!

ok i checked the old DPFE and it seemed fine but i swapped it anyway.

no change......... same mileage so that wasnt the problem either....... plugs are next unless someone else has anyother ideas????
i have 2 coil packs that i can swap as well.
i'm driving with the rpms in the 2000-2700 range so i dont think that leadfooting is an issue. if i drive below 2000 the engine is working alot harder and is not happy.

DPFE is the sensor that lets the computer know the position of the EGR valve
