Gas tank removal

I am having a dickens of a time removing the gas tank from a 1993 Ranger extended cad 4X4. 4.0 engine 5 speed.
Brackets are removed and the tank is just setting there, but I can't pull it out.
Help!

It may be easier to unbolt it from the bed, but wrestling the filler neck between the bed and frame is a serious PITA. There is a formed plastic tube inside the rubber hose, it doesn't permit much flexing or bending.

Once lowered a bit, be careful with the fuel lines, as they cannot be kinked.

Driveshaft removal makes this job a thousand times easier.

Well yeah, but I am assuming that if the tank didnt drop at all the hose clamp is not going to be easily accessed.

He can always put the filler back in and then put the tank up once everything is apart. Or just disconnect them once he gains a little access.

I will try to remove it by removing the drive line. The front of the tank fits above a cross member and shield, it will not drop straight down. I may end up removing the rear axle. The filler tube is not a problem as it is now just a hose because I have a flat bed.

Thanks for all the input. If anyone out there has dealt with this before with a 4X4 I sure would appreciate the input.

You don't have to pull the shaft, it just makes it easier.

And forget about pulling the rear axle, that's just asinine.

The tank's front 9 inches is like a tab that's tightly jammed above the cross-member.

Remove tank straps, remove HOSES & WIRES, then just grab the tank itself, and yank it straight towards the rear bumper. Otherwise, fill it with gas (or water?) so it'll hang down from its own (VERY HEAVY!) weight, making it easier to grab for pulling backwards. Is your sway bar blocking its path?

Did you remove the truck bed, for access to the tank from above?
