Another new guy here. Not sure if this should be here, but I working on this now. Tell me if this should be in another forum and where. 84 Ranger 4x4, 108 inch WB, rubber filler on tank. Tank rusting and leaking. Want to replace, but all listings for tanks only show rear wheel drive for this wheel base. Is there a difference ? Looked at Dorman, Spectra, LMC amd Rock Auto.
Anybody try a 2 wd in a 4x4 ? Really prefer to replace and not patch tank.
Thanks, I have used this site in the past, but never posted.

Nobody has had to replace a gas tank in a 84 shortbed 4x4?

^^^I guess not!?!?
I can't think of why the gas tank would change if using the same year between 4x4 and 2x4 other than the transfer case. Measure the length of your old one and the new one, that should let you know if the new one will work. If you don't have access to the new one, contact the seller for measurements.
Good luck,

Richard

I have tanks from an '88 short bed and an '88 extra cab 4x, but, they are taking a snow vacation at the present, and I don't think they ship. So if Nor Calif. is your area . . .

Thanks, but I believe anything 85 and up is made differently. Didn't fuel injection and in-tank pumps start in 85?
Besides, I am on the other side of the country.
What is strange, my 85 Ford factory parts manual only shows one tank for 2x and 4x in 83 -84. The repo tank manufactures info says their tanks are for 2x only. If it warms up here, I am going to take a closer look and some measurements.

That is exactly what I am asking. All replacement tanks for 108 WB say rear wheel drive or two wheel drive only. Hoping someone could tell me if they put a 2x tank in a 4x.I will try to call or e-mail LMC or Spectra.

There is no difference bvetween the 2wd tank and the 4x4 tank.

the question of asking RWD or 4x4 is about as relevant as asking what color the truck is or if you have a bench or bucket seats.

Though if you buy an '85 tank you'll also need an '85 sending unit.

Going into '85 ford switched to a larger diameter mounting hole for the sending unit.

manufactures error?

Fineline, Spectra and LMC catalogs say there is a difference for 83/84 shortbed, but they don't offer 4x4 or answer my e-mails. I am having my doubts that there is any difference. Planning on taking measurements, then maybe take a chance they are wrong. If I find out for sure, I will post.

There is a difference. I bought this tank, Spectra Premium

F20B

Under Cab; 108 in. wheelbase; Rubber Filler; Exc. 4WD

Tank is longer in front, very close to double-cardan u-joint.
Will need some minor modification and can't use original crappy plastic shield.
Will post pics when garage warms up and I can complete install.

Just strap a 16 gallon beer keg in the back and hook the fuel lines up to it. :icon_thumby:

Sorry, couldn't resist. I did the beer keg fuel tank on an old hillbilly dune buggy I built back in my teens.

Tank is in. Clearence at Cardan is about 1.5 inches. Might just add a driveshaft loop.
Don't thrash the truck much anymore, and with the price of diesel this truck is my usual driver. (don't have to drive daily anymore)

For you guys dealing with the 84 fuel sender, if it will help, the resistance readings on one that works are:
Full-13, Empty- 65

61 Dodge M37 military 4x
84 Ranger shortbed 4x
2002 Dodge 2500 Cummins 4x
2003 Dodge 1500 4 door 2x
1965 Olds 98 convert project

Thanks for the info...............and your avatar sent me back to Viet Nam War for about 20 seconds

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICES.
:icon_cheers:
I did a lot of work to the M37. Repowered with a mildly built 360. Don't like the Boggers. Might be for sale in the spring.
