today i pulled over to check the oil and when i took the oil filler cap off ,the cap smelled like gas,no strong but you could smell it..and i started my truck up today after it was warmed up and it idled fine for about 10 minutes then it reved up from about 800 rpms to about 1000rpms and then sputtered and died..started it back up first try and it idled fine for the rest of the night..could the two be related or am i just being a little to cautious and not worry about it.any help woud be much appreciated.:headbang:

Check compression....might be low compression on a cylinder., valves or rings
test fuel pressure....might be a FPR giving hints of retirement
when was the last time a tune up was done? ....might be poor ignition on a cylinder or 2

lastly...run codes...any one of the sensors could be telling the ECM to over fuel...complicating any of the other possible above mentioned.

ok so its snowed pretty good where im at today and i was gettin on the throttle a bit to get unstuck and now the check engine light came on and it will periodically idle rough then go back to good idle...doesnt sputter or nothing when im driving tho

by the way the fuel pump wines alot more than most of the rangers ive had before.

Are you gaining oil level?

Might need to clean the IAC. ALSO see #2 post

I am no expert so take this as brainstorming. could your fuel pressure regulator diaphragm/spring be shot and gas is leaking back thru the vacuum line causing some gas in the oil and creating all your other issues. I would pull the vacuum line of the fpr( I think it is on the fuel rail) and see if there is gas in it. also do you know your fuel pressure, key on and engine running

would a dirty IAC cause the check engine light to come on and where is the FPR located at?

UPDATE:i left my truck overnight and this morning i went to start it up and it started up no problem at all and idled perfectly fine for about 10 seconds(during that 10 seconds the check engine light was OFF)then all of a sudden the check engine light came on and it started to idle very rough...i drove it about 5 miles to a friends house and when i stoped it idled perfectly fine then 10 minutes later it idled rough again..im not sure whats goin on.....my check engine light use to come on when i turn right sharply but not when i turned left..idk if that has to do with anything.

I dont know the obd-I system to well. the iacv is an integral part o your truck so I assume it would throw a code. You should clean it and see what happens. I think your fpr is on the fuel rail but i am not positive. i know it is not in the fuel tank

so i popped the hood today determined to figured out the problem and i literally fell over with relief and stupidity..when i popped the hood this is the first thing i saw....

plugged this back in and the check engine light turned off and it immediatley idled good again...i feel like an idiot.:annoyed:

oh ..........any blind person could have missed that.............lol
