My credo
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
The other day got fuel in XLT. Guy on other side of same pump in Z71 had the store attendant out there pointing out gas under his truck. I was thinking wtf guy must be out of it. So I set the nozzle and fill mine, it goes slow as f, finally shuts off and - guess what - big puddle of gas under my truck. Now I've read that loose filler hose can cause this. But I never had any problem, plus the chance 2 trucks would have this same problem at the same time is pretty small. So I go tell the guy "it's not shutting off properly" and he says "I'll call the pumps lady".

Anyone ever experienced this? I'm pretty sure my truck is fine and I'm thinking the pump sensor that detects full isn't working right. I don't know anything about it but I do know you're not supposed to be paying for gas that didn't go in the truck.

My RoFo does this. Clerk said the pumps fail to shut off because they pump excruciatingly slow. I guess the shutoff mechanism relies on backpressure, so when the gas just trickles in, it isn't set off properly.

Happened on two separate cars at the same station almost months apart, so I doubt your truck is to blame. I just stopped getting gas there.

Speed could be the issue. I’ve found that when the underground tank is getting empty, the pumps slow down big time.

Yeah it's an easy way to lose business.

If gas was leaking out from under it chances are your filler hose is rotten, my '97 is fried but "fixed" for now... I tried ordering one one time but it wasn't right so I bandaided it... I took the hose clamp off the tank end and wrapped it with like 5 wraps of "pipe wrap tape" since it was the widest nylon tape I had... that was like 3 years ago and no more gas smell. I'll fix it right one day...

Well, yeah it could be but I suspect it was leaking out the top somewhere and running down along the hose.... can't say for sure, except, it's never happened before, and it happened to the guy next to me so that makes me think, pump problem. But for sure if it happened again filler hose would be my go-to. I've had it over a year, probably filled it ten times or so, it's never happened before. I guess time will tell.

Ive had it happen where it bubbles out the filler because the auto shutoff was slow to respond.
