I have a 1986 ragner 2.3l manual and i checked the oil because i was having some problems and it smells like gas could this be leaky injectors or bad fuel pressure regulator?please help

Could be both but I'd assume the FPR. Check the pressure of the FPR and also try pulling the vac line off of it after driving and see if anything dribbles out.

Pressure should be about 40 with the key on, engine off and somewhere around 30-35 when running. When the truck's off, check to see if the pressure drops more then 10 psi. It shouldn't.

whats the fpr?and where is it loacated and is there any way to check the fuel pressure regulator?

Also fairly common if someone has tried unsuccessfully to start it when really cold for it to have gotten flooded to the point that gas leaks past the rings.

Yep, rings was my first thought. Correct me if I'm wrong, but leaking injector(s) and/or FPR would not leak into the crankcase...

Have you been making lots of short trips (~10 minutes or less)? The engine runs rich when it's cold and will lead to fuel dilution in the oil. Totally normal, but hard on the oil.

no i havent been able to get it started but i smelt gas in the oil and was just trying to elminate that problem.

FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator. Sorry about that!

i was thinking it was the fuel pressure regulator. My 88' ranger did the same thing it had gas in the oil and on the plugs.i changed out the diaghram in the pressure regulator and it stoped the gas in oil.Might change this on the 86 ranger

Hold the phone for a second...

You said you can't get it started? It's really common for engine oil to get a little gassy if you are having engine trouble. For example, if you aren't getting any spark, fuel and air are making it into the cylinders, and then a bit of it will blow right out, and some will seep past the rings and into the oil. It's also common to see gas in the oil on engines where one or more cylinder isn't firing.

He may not be able to get it started because of bad compression BECAUSE of bad ring(s).

Do a compression test and/or a leakdown test and change the oil.
