my 91 ranger gas guage doesnt work, it constantly reads just less than half a tank and i know that it has a full tank. is there a fuse for the guage?

if theres no fuse what are the odds that it is just the guage that is broke? and how do i know?

if not the guage then is there a sensor in the gas tank that can be replaced and what is it called? fuel level sensor or something?

thanks

most likely the float in the tank. Im pretty certain there is a fuse in the fuse panel check that first though.

Its called a sending unit.

I don't have numbers, but I'm sure you can find the voltage/ resistance values that you need to TEST the gauge, and/ or sending unit.

The diagnosis is not replacing things, it is testing them.

My 95 4.0 had the gas guage stuck on full for a while...my buddy took out the float and greased it...I wish I had been around to see how he did it exactly, but it works fine now.

If you take the sending unit out be careful not to bend the wire the float goes on. I had to get a tank from the junk yard because mine was rusted out,the sending unit and fuel pump looked new so I got it too,the tank had a dent on the bottom so I bent the line holding the fuel pump a little bit to get it off the very bottom of the tank...big mistake! It threw the gas gauge was off,it showed the level dropping by a quarter tank in 30 miles. It also leaked badly around the sending unit O-ring because I used the old one, even though I was careful putting it in. If you need to take it out be sure to get a new O-ring,the parts stores dont have them but Ford does and it was under $2. If you need to get a new sending unit it comes with the O-ring.
