Has anyone here built their own garage cabinets? I need some cabinets for my garage. The metal ones are expensive, and I'n not to sure about the plastic ones. Plus, the plastic ones keep changing style, so it makes it hard to add more later that match. I'm thinking of just making my own.

Let's see what you have. Post pics.

Thanks.

I just have a bunch of the sheet-metal shelves, a couple home-made wood work benches, and some stamped steel lockers that we grabbed outta the dumpster about 15 years ago when the college my dad works for renovated the campus center/pool/gym.

It works well for larger items, but once you get below the size of a 1 qt oil bottle things start getting lost, so the place is also littered with butter dishes full of nuts and bolts.

Old fridges/freezer work great plus they keep the dust out.

I don't like cabinets. If my storage has doors on it, I lose shit and end up buying more.

Kind of is the same with shelves too - can't make the shelves too deep or that box of bolts you need gets buried and lost, you buy more, and find them later when they're no longer needed.

I am very organized but you would never know it - my storage usually looks like a huge pile.

I hate the plastic ones, they always seem to have shelves that sag after awhile and misc other problems.

I'd say build your own or have someone build 'em for you. I don't have any pictures of the ones we've built right now though, I built a small workbench at college that quickly ended up being converted to a different type of workbench. We had shelves and a workbench built at our old house, but haven't built anything at the new house yet other than a few simple shelves in some offset areas of the garage - we used 1x pine, a lil 2x2, and 5/8"-3/4" plywood. Haven't got the doors for them yet.

Simpson Strong Tie makes a KWB1 kit for building a workbench or shelving unit and a few other connectors designed for constructing workbenches and shelves (RTF2Z, RTA, RTC) to expand possibilities.

I usually never bothered with using those connectors, but they could help. I'd probably just do shelving and put doors on the ones I wanted to, either make my own or buy pre-made doors (Home Depot and other stores like that will sell doors, just check to see what sizes are available without paying for a custom size and make your shelves to fit.

I've been building custom shelving in my shed, I'll have to get a picture when I get some more done, right now most of the materials are cut, I just have to get my compressor down there to nail it up.

yeah, F cabinets. you put stuff in them and then forget you have it. 2x4's with plywood or OSB shelves. then if you really wanna seal stuff up, get those big plastic storage bins from target or lowes or walmart and put it in there. for example, i wash all my hunting clothes with scent killer at the end of season, put them in a plastic bag and then put them in a plastic bin and labeled it. i dont have any pics right now, but i'll find some and post them

you could try and find some old cabinets from a kitchen renovation.

+1! They can usually be had really cheap, or free, especially if the home owner is doing all the work.

+2. This is what I plan on doing. Have been watching craigslist. Then you can paint them and, if needed, make your own doors so that they are easy to match if you want to add more later.
