My credo
From here on down it's uphill all the way!
I decided that my 3.0, 5 speed 2wd Ranger was ready for new transmission and rear gear lubricant at 65,000 miles. It has spent its life as an Arizona farm truck and probably suffered some rough treatment. I have now owned it 5 months.
One great thing about the 2wd Edge is that it has the same ride height as a 4wd. This allowed me to put a piece of cardboard on my garage floor and crawl under it to do the work.
While I was at Wal Mart I bought one of those oil drain pans that looks like a large jug. You simply drain your fluids into it, then open the top and pour the old stuff right into your container for disposal. Unfortunately when the transmission fluid came out of the drain plug it spilled over the rather shallow edges onto the garage floor :(
So when I drained the oil out of the rear end I went back to the old deep oil drain pan I have used in the past. No problems.
The transmission uses the same fluid as the Ford automatic transmissions do. I think it shifts much smoother now and the stuff that came out was dark but clear. The rear end had a small amount of stuff on the magnetic drain plug and the differential gears looked great.
Overall I have been quite pleased with the truck and I am glad to be able to haul things once again.
Fun in the garage!

Great job on the maintenance.

It'll reward you with years of faithful service.
