On the other hand, I wouldn't want somebody to rear-end my 03' Ranger with an 88' S-10 or Blazer, not that I think it would break my Ranger, just don't want the dent. It's sort of hard to associate reliability or unreliability with an entire brand of vehicles.
I had 1992 S-10 4.3 with 230,000 miles on it and it ran like new, gave it to my sister because I need 4x4. A friend of mine had a 2001 S-10 2.2 with 72,000 miles and it ran like shit, difference was I took care of my S-10 and he just drove his, also I think GM's quality has declined significantly over the years.
On the Ford side my father had a 1995 Aerostar. It was the first vehicle he bought new. The engine had to be rebuilt at only 95,000 miles. He figured it should be good for at least another 100k miles; at 145,000 miles the block was cracked and there was an inch and a half of play in the crankshaft, furthermore it couldn't pass smog anymore. He got rid of it. A friend in high school had a similar Aerostar with the 4.0 instead of the 3.0 my dad's had and it ran fine with 260k miles on it, its demise was getting sideswiped by a Honda.
I don't hear a whole lot of bad things about Chrysler's engines, but they seem to have a strong track record for making automatic transmissions that break.
In any event, I think if you take care of your vehicle it will take care of you. Just my two cents.
