My credo
None at all.
The victim's stats. 2001 Ranger XLT 2.5L Auto std. cab short bed. The SO bought it with 59,000 miles and one owner. I recently acquired said Ranger for my project.

I recently had a fuel pump failure. I removed the bed to clean out the tank, replace the sending unit, and replace the fuel filler hoses. After completing the work, I needed fuel to get the truck running and be able to make it to the fuel station two miles from my house. I bought 5.5 gallons of fresh fuel. After getting the 5.5 gallons of fuel in, I started the truck and allowed it to idle a few minutes to check for leaks. Then I headed off to the fuel station. I filled the tank completely with fuel. It held even 12 gallons of fuel on top of 5.5 gallons I filled it with before leaving home. That's 17.5 gallons of fuel. Let us ass-u-me I used a full gallon to get to the fuel station 2 miles away. That leaves me with 16.5 gallons of fuel in the tank when I filled up. I didn't cram fuel in until it puked out of the filler. I allowed the fuel pump to stop on its own. I was under the impression that this Ranger should have come from the factory with a 14-gallon tank. While I was working on replacing the sending unit, I found a factory sticker next to the fill port that had 2000 on it. Unfortunately, fuel washed the sticker away before I could get a pic of it. This leads me to believe that the tank isn't the original, or the manufacturer used a leftover 2000 extended cab tank. I think that may be the case because this Ranger is early 2001 with a 2.5L engine instead of the 2.3L Duratec. Does this seem plausible, or is this the wrong tank for this truck? I did have to modify the bracket and pump to shorten the assembly to fit in the tank. It was 1.25 inches too tall. I bought the right sending unit listed for my truck. The tank does seem a bit long for the size of the truck. If this is the correct tank for my truck, is there a larger tank that will fit in its place?

Yes, I posted this same topic on R-F.

well you might have used 3.5 gallons of fuel to go 2 miles to the fuel station :p

then you would be right on the mark for your 14 gallon tank. My guess would be that you have a larger tank in it. maybe an option? my 97 has a 20 gallon in it, but it is an extended cab.

16.5-17 gallons (depending on year) is the standard tank size listed for a regular cab shortbed in a few brochures I have from years ago.
19.5 or 20 gallons (again depending on year) was optional on reg cab longbed trucks, and is standard tank size on Supercab.

I think a lot of the time the dates on parts stickers are for when the part was made. Given that they even made 2001 Rangers the last few months of 2000 is it is totally understandable to have a 2000 dated part on a 2001 truck.

My '85 std cab has a 17gal tank and so did my '86 std cab parts truck (that tank is now in my '85)

Thanks for the info everyone. I've been watching my fuel milage and I'll top off first of next week. I'll really fill it up. I may have the larger tank. Like I said, I didn't keep forcing fuel into the tank, I just let the pump kick off and called it full.

<HIJACK> Do you by any chance have a brochure for the 1990 Ranger? </HIJACK>

Have you tried eBay for a brochure?

I have a 1992 one, but not 1990. Sorry.

I think my email address is in my profile. Since 1990 isn't much different from 1992 (there might be a difference in special option packages, and I know that 1992 the 2.9 in my 1990 was no longer available, but otherwise I think everything is the same. Would you be willing to scan it and email it to me?

1992 was the last year for the 2.9L (it was 1990 only for 2WD trucks).

I seem to remember giving scans of all the brochures I had to Jim (TRS site owner) many years ago, but I can't seem to find where they are (or maybe they never got put up?)... I'll look on my other computer when I get a chance, it's possible they might still be on there.

But yeah, I've seen them on Ebay too. I think people typically were asking somewhere around $5-8 for them, if you need a 1990 one bad enough.

I looked on Fleabay last night. There were a few for $6 to $8.00, but on some of them shipping was over $20.00. On all of them it looked like I'd pay more for shipping than I'd pay for the brochure.

Contact them and let them know your interest in their product and ask them to provide you with actual shipping.
