I got a 1988 Ranger XLT 4x4 (standard cab + bed) from a fellow member about a month back, I’ve been having issues with the fuel tanks and system ever since
When I got the truck, I was well aware of the fuel tank having a hole, and that the truck also comes with a new tank. However after uninstalling the bed and tank, I put them side by side only to find out the tank is the wrong one (114” wheelbase) instead of the one I needed (108” wheelbase)
Eventually, I had looked at a new tank and straps from Rock Auto and looked at the SKU number online. Making sure to check the SKU number, I found both were sold by O’Reilly’s and said it would fit my ranger. So I picked them up and took them home.
A week goes by since I’m busy prepping and painting the frame. After finishing the frame, I go to put the new tank in and notice the plastic protector that prevents rocks and debris from hitting the tank and the tank from sliding doesn’t fit on. So I think, what’s the difference? Then to notice the old tank has a slant or corner that’s shaped for it. And the sharp edges of the tank are bent.
Then, I decide if I crank it down hard enough, I’m certain it will hold and I won’t need the plastic part. Only then, as I put the tank in, I notice the edge rubs up against the driveshaft. So I bend it to prevent rubbing, but now when I go to put the straps in, they don’t even reach the bolts that hold the old straps.
I don’t know what to do and I’m getting frustrated on why this is happening. The tanks are the same SKU, except when measured, the old one is 45” while the new on is 51”.
The engine was swapped to a 302 v8 (not by me) and has a ford C4 transmission. I’m concerned that the swap forced the previous owner to move the transfer case back to make space, which causes issue for the driveshaft.
If anyone can help, please. I need as much help as I can get. Any further questions will be answered to the best of my ability.
