Fuel Tank Filler Hose

Hope this is in the right forum...started noticing a fuel smell when driving with the window down or at idle then fuel streamed down the side of the tank during a fill up. Started to remove the tank and was having a time getting the lower hose clamp loose on the tank filler hose and comtemplated just cutting the hose in two, heck it couldn't cost more than $30, right? Resisted the temptation and called the dealer to ask how much...$380 for 1994 Ranger SC with swb. I nearly fell out of my chair. Needless to say, I finally wrestled the thing out of there and have pics if anyone cares. Surely someone has a lower priced fix for this?

Yeah there's a slight mark up on those... Ford knows there's a problem and are pricing accordingly. I got mine for cost from a Ford parts guy and is was like 90 bucks if I remember right. I have heard of people using fill hoses for racing fuel cells and piecing them with the stock filler hose, but even that is about 30 bucks per foot. Last option, or first, is a junk yark.

I was startled by the price of the OEM hose myself.

For anyone doing the job it is a lot easier lifting the bed from the truck a couple of inches or removing it altogether.

There are aftermarket pipes ranging from $90 to $180 and I opted for that route about a year ago. Keep an eye on these aftermarket pipes, while still sealed it appears similar cracking in the exterior of the rubber around the clamps is already occuring.

Good luck

A common issue. I picked up 4 feet of 2" gas fill hose from Carquest for less than $5. You can cut off the old hose but will need it to measure for length. When sliding on the new hose to the hard plastic pipe be extremely careful. As I was twisting it on I cracked the hard pipe at the elbow. Was able to repair. Then squirted wd40 inside the hose as I wiggled it again. Just take your time. Now the tank end is about 3" dia and the hose is 2". Again just use wd40 and it will go on. Depending on your weather conditions you could also stick the hose in the oven to help relax the rubber. Anyway I had to put the bed on and off several times to get the fill hose properly lined up at the fill door. Check the link out if you crack your pipe. I have the long bed and the after market hoses found on ebay are for the short bed. Good luck and have patience. :bye:

Ok I think we can officially call this one of the more recurring problems with the Ranger. It happened to me and I've heard of about 10 others who it happened to as well. Also agreed that it is much easier to get to, look at and fix if you pull the bed off, which is a simple task. If you're looking into a replacement that isn't from the Ford dealer this is the only place I ever found.

...I have the same problem and I found that link a month ago and they were 99 bucks shipped...Now they are $155...:dunno:

i just smelled fuel the other day wheeling but didn't see any leakage around the hose.i get the feeling its my turn to fix the filler neck problem.

I know my thread is old, & I've limped along for nearly 3 years, putting 12 gals. in it to keep it from leaking out and wondering how much evaporates on hot days. Thanks to others who recommend this guy, I've just ordered one from Ebay for $35 shipped. Reports are showing it to be a great fit. Here is the link for the rest of you who might still need one. You guys are the best for trying things & letting us know.
