i know my truck has a leak back issue, do i need to replace the whole unit or just the pump inside the unit.

I replaced just the pump in my '00 and saved a hundred bucks or so over replacing the whole sending unit/pump, but I had a mechanic swap the new pump into the sending unit and I watched him do it and it looked a bit tricky, so for simplicity's sake it might be easier to just buy the sending unit and pump already assembled.

The price difference between just the pump and the pump + sender assembly is very small. The floats on the senders go out on a regular enough basis that it's worth doing the entire assembly. I just did my entire assembly because the fuel lines were rotting out. At Rock the pump alone is $50-$80; the assembly starts at $90.

So it is just the pump, i can get just the pump for 25 bucks but the whole unit is 250, or if i het one out of a wrecked truck its a hundred

I just replaced my pump.

The whole unit including the pump was about 95 bucks. Not a real big price difference for the whole unit versus just the pump so just pick up the whole sending unit from your local parts store.

Where did you get that pump and sending unit? If I remember correctly when I bought my pump four years ago the going price for the whole unit was around $350.

I got the sending unit and pump together from pepboys.

fuel doesnt stay in the line so it leaks back into the tank, so to start it i have to turn the key on 3 or 4 times to prime the line, ive heard of other people with this problem, and also what year is your truck, if its older that may be why its only 95, look it up for a 06 its 250 for an after market.

That's about what I payed for the whole assembly in my '03. I had the exact same issue. It was kind of a pain to swap out, but not too miserable. Just make sure you have an empty tank when you go to do it.:icon_thumby:

so i still dont know if i need to get the whole unit or just the pump :icon_confused:

Six of one, half a dozen of the other... if you're going to keep your Ranger for awhile, and seeing as you'll have everything apart already, then it might be worth the extra $ to swap in the whole unit. If you're not going to keep your truck, then to save some $ you might consider just going for the pump.

Well since i dont have a bed my fuel pump is really easy to get too and their easy to get out of the tank.
