Fuel pump?

Lately in my '88 B2 I've been having long starts with it. It cranks and cranks and then finally starts, usually when it is already warm. Cold it seems to start fine. After, it smells like fuel. I don't notice any leaks.
I believe this truck has two fuel pumps, maybe a low pressure one in the tank and a higher pressure one in-line under my seat. I think I can hear the one in the tank humming, however lately I don't hear the in-line one under my seat. It is usually loud. However I could be wrong.
Would a fuel pump going out cause me to have slow starts but still drive fine, or would it not start at all if one pump was out? I already changed the filter, however I have not checked pressure. Thanks.

I'm gonna change the coil and see if that changes anything, I know I've been told that a coil can cause problems if it heats up. I smell fuel so I think that would be a good sign.

I know a fuel pump that's going out will cause it to be hard to start but idk if the temp will be a factor. I assume the cooler air will be denser so it will deliver more o2 and be less likely to cause a rich air fuel mixture but idk what the temperature would have to be for that to be a large factor. Try testing the fuel pump by either flow testing it and/or hooking power up to it with the key off. If it works try it multiple times to see if it will fail.

In my experience, a bad pump will cause problems at all times even when driving. Check the pressure. We've had a few problems with the strainer in the tank as well, but if it runs fine while cruising I doubt that's it.

Has anybody seen the 2nd pump, the external on a 1989 BII? I bought one that the guy parked for 6 years, full of gas. Said it just quit running, he placed the internal pumps twice, I'm thinking a short and bad gas(ethanol),don't really want to drop tank(been there) I have another BII. I know SUCKER. But for $500 have to try.Help,p.s already changed IE switch and ICM.

In 1989 for the Bronco II Ford decided to make things a little less complicated and use just one in tank high pressure pump for the fuel system, just like pretty much every other car or truck on the road. So if you have a 89, it has one in tank pump.
