so bought my truck with the fuel pump hard wired to the toggle i have the wires traced to where relay under hood should be i have an 87 ranger 2.9 v6..anyone have a pic or something i can look at or diagram so i can wire it up the riht way casue now with switch i hear the pump the whole time while running or is this another issue...tehres a plug that has a wire looped back into itself to but not sure any ideas would be nice

Does the connector look similar to this if so the fuel pump has been hot wired for some reason? Pull the wire out and get a relay and plug it in then turn on the key the pump should run for a bit and stop, then start it it should run full time with the engine running?
You need to determine what the other person was doing. I believe the 87 still had two fuel pumps a low pressure in the tank and the high pressure under the drivers seat. Are you having performance issues? They later went to a single fuel pump in the tank much more dependable. I will try and find the wiring diagram but the way it goes is the computer turn the fuel pump on for a few seconds when you turn the key and then runs full time once the engine is running. Power goes from the relay through the inertia switch on the passenger floorboard under the carpet then to the fuel pump/s. In the case of a crash the fuel pump turns off sou you dont pump the tank dry if a fuel line breaks and there is no need to run the fuel pump if the engine is off. It would be wise to get it working properly for safety reasons period.

thx alot for the info been tinkering with truck since i got it...new water pump, fan clutch, oil change..now it died randomly today on me while driving but started right back up like nothing happened..seems like one thing after another
