Gentlemen,

alright, so I've lifted my bed of my 89 XLT, replaced the fuel pump assembly/strainer/sending unit, etc. i put new wires leading from the pump to the engine bay, all is well, except......

There are 2 relays underneath the fuse box underneath the hood. 1 is a green 4 prong which appears to be the FP relay, the other is a dark brown 4 prong relay as well.

the truck will not start. It no longer blows the 30amp fuse going to the fuel pump, but i think I have a bad relay.

Now, the question is: where can I get a 4 prong FP relay? Napa, Autozone, Oreliy's, Car Quest, Pep Boys, Advance Auto, etc - all have a 5 prong fuel pump relay.

I've bought 2 of them already - and they wont work. I spoke to a local ford dealer, and they told me the 4th connection in the relay is the one that gives it the juice to fire up the truck. the relays with the 5 prong apparently have it on the 5th prong. price at ford: $120 for 1 relay.

anyone got one lying around somewhere? !( LOL ) !!!

or any thoughts on where I can get one? thats all I need to st:icon_thumby:art up the truck - and sell it!

thanks,

-david

Go to the bone yard and grab a couple for a 5 buck minimum one is bound to work maybe one will fall in your pocket as your looking for body parts.

Wont any 4 post relay work all it is is a coil with a contactor I know guys here buy them all the time. Look on ebay.

A used one would be better just in case you still have the short that caused it to fail in the first place your not throwing any money away they are like 25 to 50 bucks new on ebay and the same as the accessory relay in most cases.

Haven't looked, but normally the relay will have a schematic diagram on the side of it to show which pins do what. If you find one with the same set up, it should work.

There is another post on here: “Fuel pump (in-tank) only works if I jump the relay” http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90755

I posted the pin outs and some information there that you may find useful.

I would just jump the contacts and see if the truck will fire up, than get the relay.

you woud put a jumper between the two wires that are switched
yellow/black and orange/ltblu that will run the fuel pump full time or you can run two wires to a switch in the cab just dont forget to turn it on or off. that would be the two large terminals in the connector I believe.

I have jumped mine to make it work. I am trying to figure out what is wrong. I bought a 5 pin at Checker /O"riely and used it. I 5 pin is a universal replacement I have been told. Mine worked one time, but now I have to jump it. I have order a wiring diagram. I hope to figure it out once it arrives.

Alright, well i ordered the 2 relays from Ford. $198 later, i got the 2 motorcraft ones with a 1 year warranty.

plugged them in - fired right up. they didnt get hot like the other ones did.

sucks i spent money i didnt have, but the truck runs again. I just need to drop the bed on it and it'll be back on the road.

thanks for the advice/tips fellas.
