the other morning i moved my truck(96 ranger) so i could clean it up ... it started fine and ran fine ... i turned it off and cleaned it up, tried to start it back up and it ran for maybe 3 seconds and died on me .... i had my uncle look at it because he seems to know alot about cars and he said it was my fuel pump ... i went and got a fuel pump we put it in today and its still just cranking... we poured some fuel into the intake and it started and ran until the fuel ran out .... we cant even hear the fuel pump prime when we turn the key .... does anyone know what the problem could be?

im haveing the same problem people has told me to check the fuel pump relay and the interior switch that switch is located on mine passenger floor under the carpet by where youre toes would be its a black box with a red button just make sure the button is pushed in or unplug it and put a jumper wire and if it cranks with the jumper wire that switch is bad hope this helps and if you figure out what it is let me know cause im haveing the same problem thanks

when you say you cleaned it up o you mean the engine compartment? maybe something got wet and you blew a fuse......check your owners manual for the fuel pump fuse........you can go to fleetford.com and get on if you need to.

remember diagnose and then replace!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you turn the key to on you should hear the pump for about 2 seconds. If you don't check the relay, the inertia switch and there may be a fuse.

When I change my pump on the 92 last week I had to turn the key on and off about six times to get enough fuel up to the fuel rail for it to start.

ok guys we got the fuel pump to kick on ... when we were raising the gas tank back up the electrical harness on top of the tank got disconnected .... but the truck still wont start i keyed it on and off 6-8 times and it fired up once and ran about 3 seconds then cut back off .... what could b the problem now

did you check the inertia switch and the fuses again?

i checked the inertia switch .... could u still hear the pump prime if the fuse was blown

we took the line off to the fuel filter and we r getting very little gas coming through the line so it must be pinched somewhere

ok guys i checked the fuel line and it doesnt seem to be pinched ..... what else could it be

this is getting confusing, plus you are not answering the questions peeps posted i.e. did you clean the engine bay with water?

from what i can understand you are saying that the pump is new and it is working? is the fuel filter new and is it going in the right direction. Have you done a koeo fuel pressure test?

my first thought was that you clean the engine bay and got something elctrical wet........could this have happend

i didnt clean the engine bay .... we finally got the fuel pump working ...we can hear it prime when we switch the key on ... but it still is not firing up ...we took the line off the fuel filter and there is only a small stream of gas coming out.... i do not have a new fuel filter... how do i do a fuel pressure test?

on the fuel rail there is a shrader valve(looks like a tire vavle) that is where you check for pressure, you can buy a gauge at harberfreight for $20 or they loan them from autozone. that being said if the pump is new it is proably not the issue. when you pulled the line of the fuel filter was it the side toward the engine or the side toward the tank. I would replace the fuel filter $10. make sure it is going in the right direction. then try and start it. you might have to cycle the key a few times. also check the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator for gas. it is on the fuel rail also. there should not be gas in it.........you wired the pump correctly right?

all we had to do was clip on the wiring harness ... the fuel pump is getting power .... we were worried that we might have got the lines mixed up ... when we take the line off at the fuel filter only a little bit of gas comes out ... would this do this if the lines were crossed?
