Ok, so I am looking to accomplish one last thing this season. I want to fix the gas gauge in my BII. I know it's the sender in the tank, and I am not pulling the tank twice. This means a new pump assembly.

I looked at NAPA. They have a bunch of them, all Delphi, ranging from $300 to $500.

So then I went to Rock.

They have like 4, ranging from $67 to about $100.

The brands in question are

Airtex

Bosch

Delphi

and a single remaining Delco unit.

I have an airtex HP in my truck, and haven't had any issues, but I've heard their quality has gone down in the last 5 years or so. the one in my truck is about 7 years old.

I know an like Bosch, but Delphi is unknown to me.

As for Delco, I know their stuff is at least decent, but I'm not sure how I feel about putting Chevy parts in my Ford.

Any input?

Delphi and AC Delco are one in the same, just rebranded names. And don't feel bad about putting a GM product in a Ford, I was stunned when I pulled a Delphi fuel shut off solenoid from a 91 Cummins engine to be replaced.

My preference would be Bosch or AC Delco (Delphi). Airtex from what I've researched before, are just a parts company for OEM style parts, not OEM quality.

Heh, just scrolled down a hair farther and noticed a Motorcraft one. Decision made.

I don't know where your tank is in relation to the body on your truck. On my old Explorer I cut an access panel out of the floor right above the pump. I made a hinged door for it and a latch. Sealed it with weather strip and never had to drop the tank again. On my Ranger I just pull the bed.
As for the pumps Motorcraft, Delphi, or Carter are my preferences in that order. I have a Carter in my truck now as it was all I could find at the time.

That was my original plan, I even know right where to cut the panel out. I just don't have time right this minute. On the other hand I do have access to a lift, high-lift trans jacks, air tools, etc. At this point it seems like it'd just be easier to take it to work some Saturday and take the tank out.

On smaller parts Bosch has gotten spotty in their quality. On larger electrical parts, the 25 yr old stuff hasn't worn out yet. So I don't know if the new stuff is any good :D

Any fuel pickup work that requires a tank drop or body removal is just plain poor engineering. Even on the SJ Jeeps made by AMC , access was provided. :D

Airtex, sucks.... Motorcraft in my wifes mustang went 50k the first one and 110k the second one, have a Bosch in my kids marquis 70k no problems, wifes o4 marquis is on its 3rd Motorcraft, 72K but its due to a bad sump design in the gas tank, I only by toilet paper from Napa, Rock has done good by me

Fuel Pumps : BUY OEM, whatever your truck came with, BUY THAT. In-tank fuel pumps on the aftermarket suck, OEM is the only way to go. I have no ideal why this is, any pump that fits a certain application should have NO PROBLEM as long as you replace the strainer.(and WHY does the strainer get sold separately?)

The only exception is mechanical fuel pumps, which I'd buy an Airtex.

wow, bad luck with fuel pumps. All my vehicles are still using their original fuel pumps. Ranger = 147k miles and still going, Blazer = 178k miles and still going, Regal = 190k miles and still going. Though I do suspect the Ranger's fuel pump is getting a little worn out, longer engine crank when the gas tank is low.

I have never gotten a fuel pump that didnt have a strainer on it.

This will be the 3rd pump I have replaced between my 2 RBVs. The high pressure pump on my truck died and left me on the side of the road once.

The other two were for fuel level sender issues.

Walbro used to make a great pump, at a low price, have one in my 86 ranger with 100k on the pump, but I have heard that they to have gone down hill, still have the orginal high pressure pump in my 86 with just over 300k, but its like alot of thing .At any time a company can decide to cut costs and it always means lower quality, when I worked for VW dealership we had about 6 months of bad rebuilt bosch starters and altenators, some times you win some times you lose

We just went through that with Ford a year or two ago. We had one customer, we put 4 alternators one his Mustang in 6 weeks (and two computers that got fried by bad alternators). He was mad, we were mad, the test kept saying alternator, we had the technical hotline involved.

Finally at the end of it all we were told "Don't tell anyone this, but the Ford reman units used for warranty replacement are having issues. Here is an approval code to get a brand new one."

We were like, "Great, when were you going to let everyone know that the Mexican'ts aren't doing their job very well?"
