87 ranger manual tranny I can prime it with ether and it fires right up,when I turn the key on I can here the relay click but no pump noise? The inertia switch is set.Are the 2 pumps hooked up to the same circuit? If 1 or both are bad can I replace the low pressure pump in the tank with 1 from a 91 4.0 and eliminate the external high pressure pump? I'm hoping to avoid the dropping of the tank thinking it might just be a bad connection is there a fuse? Where would it be ? I don't see it under the hood. THANX! :dunno:

Are both pumps not running? You can tell by the hum of the one pump on the side under the frame of the truck (driver side) and the other you can hear hum if you open the gas cap and listen.

If only one is on, one is dead. if it's both it's most likely a Fuel Pump relay. To check a relay, listen for the click. If it clicks when you turn the key on and it still doesnt work, check to make sure the voltage going into the relay is the same voltage leaving the relay. If it doesn't match, it's dead.

Also, no reason to drop the tank....

Just remove or tilt the bed off the frame. :icon_thumby:

Nice truck by the way!

chilsam-check the "engine rotates but will not start" thread. I have gotten some good advice online and you might fix yours from some of the advice I got. Don't go through all I have so far. Good luck.
