Fuel Pump Issues

I have a 1988 ranger with the 2.9 engine and I'm not getting any fuel into the engine. I'm pretty sure that it is a fuel pump problem, but I don't want to go get a new one before I'm sure which one it is. My pickup has two tanks and I am wondering whether or not there are fuel pumps in each of the tanks or if there is only the one fuel pump in the frame rail. Also are there any in-line fuses that could have burnt out and caused it to stop working?

Thanks!

Do you hear the in tank or the inline pump come on? If you only hear one, then one of the pumps are dead. If both are not making any noise at all then it's most likely electrical.

Check the fuel pump relay 1st. It's over on the passenger side. The fuel pump is green if I recall correctly. If the relay doesn't click when you turn the truck on, it's shot. If it does click, check that the voltage going out of the relay is the same as whats going in. If it's not, you need a new relay.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure each tank has it's own fuel pump but I am honestly not 100% sure. Either way, a good way to see if the tank fuel pump is dead is to jump it from the harness it's connected to. Naturally if you have power getting to it and nothings working, then it's dead.

I think I hit everything......Good luck!

I believe that there's some sort of switching valve in the mix too. Check all of your fuses and relays first though.

I have an 88 2.9 4X4 ext cab with dual tanks and I know that there is only one in tank fuel pump in the frame rail tank, and the inline high pressure fuel pump in the frame rail under the drivers door. my truck did not come with a tank switch it just has a fuel line with a fuel filter and one way check valve between the two tanks. I am not sure that all of the duel tank setups are the same for our year ranger (they probably are not the same, ford did some funky stuff with our fuel systems back then) and dont forget the fuel filters, depending on your truck you might have two or three= 1. large canister fuel filter in the frame rail by the starter/exht manifold 2. the in tank filter (pain in the A$$) and #3. (optional) you might have the fuel reservoir with a fuel filter inside of it, it has a bowl shaped bottom that the filter sits inside of and it mounts inside the frame rail beside the transfer case (between the hp fuel pump and the frame rail tank) WARNING there is also a fuel reservoir that looks the same but does not have a filter in it and is not intended to be opened. Both reservoirs have a thin o ring that will tear apart if you try to unscrew the bowl and it is almost impossible to screw the bowl back on with out destroying the new o ring. Sorry for rambling on but I have issues with this fuel system. I hope this helps you or someone else in the future. goodluck.
