Hey Guys!

My name is Katy and I am having an issue.

I have a 2002 Silverado 1500 and the fuel pump blew and I just replaced it! Now....

It won't start!!!!!

The lines are proper, the connectors are proper, there's gas!
It sounds like she wants to start but she won't.
It's really hard to describe how it sounds.

When I put a little gas directly into the throttle body she starts up just fine but of course, when the $1.00 worth of gas is ran through..she stops. So this tells me the fuel pump would be working and placed in properly? Or could this means the wiring might be wrong? I am not sure. I am STUMPED!

Of course, I can call a mechanic, but here in Canada, being a girl and all, I will be paying out my A$$! So I am trying everything but...maybe your expertise could help me?

The only thing I haven't tried was checking the PSI to make sure the pressure is getting the fuel to the motor. (which it very well can be...but can I do this on my own? and how??)

When I check the throttle body, there is no gas fume's nor is she soaked with fuel. What could that be?

Any input you may have could potentially fix my problem!

I have 2002 Silverado 1500

Thanks for your time

Katy

Hi Katy and welcome to TRS. You are on a Ford forum but what the heck. Sounds like your fuel pump isn't pumping. Check the relay under the hood. It may have been your problem all along. Also check any applicable fuses.

Sure you have fuel at the rail? Since it dies as soon as the prime charge runs out it does not sound like it. Who put the pump in? Will they look at it under warranty?

I would replace the filter and while I was there gauge it and make sure your Lift pump is pumping. If it is repeat at fuel rail. If its not its either a faulty pump or fuse/connection issue. Unhook fuel pump wires and check for 12 volts with key cycled.

Hello Katy and welcome to the site. I will just add to what was said by PanamaExpat and Frank the Tank. I would suspect that your issue all along was something in the wiring and not the pump. (I think anyone who does much work on vehicles have made the mistake of replacing a pump only to realize the problem was something else.) Use a multi meter and chase the power to the pump to see where to have and do not have power. Most likely you will find a bad fuse or relay (check you owners manual for the fuses and relay location). Also check each connection along the way. I have encountered corroded connections that cause strange problems. Also try running a wire ground wire from a good ground to the pump housing to make sure you don't have a ground issue. Time consuming but you just have to eliminate one item at a time.

I believe the Chevy works the same as the Ford fuel system.
Each time you turn on the key the fuel pump in the tank should come on for a few seconds, this primes the system.
So turn the key on and off a few times and listen for the pump, if you don't hear the pump then it is not getting power, assuming new pump was tested and is good.

On the fuel rail(where the fuel injectors live) you will see a schrader valve, like a tire's air valve, this is where you check the fuel pressure in the system, should be above 50psi for engine to start.
If you don't have a pressure gauge then test it for fuel or air, open the schrader valve like you would a tire valve, by pressing the center pin, but BE CAREFUL!!!
Have a towel over it or it will spray fuel every where, so do NOT do this on a warm engine, i.e. hot exhaust pipes.

Thanks everyone for your reply!

It took me forever to find this site again...this is why I am so late to reply!

Sorry for posting on FORD Forum..I had no idea! lol...a girl thing :p

I will look into all what you've said, considering I still haven't found the issue!

Thank again,

Back soon,

Katy:icon_cheers:
