My 1987 BII is stranded at the super market. It started then promptly died and would just turn over after that. Let it sit a for a few then it would start and promptly die. So I turned the key to the "On" position and listened, could hear the normal clicks under the hood, but not the whine of the fuel pump. so to confirm my belief that it's fuel related, I got a can of starting fluid and sprayed a dab in the intake. It would start and run until it used up the starting fluid. I hoped it was a fuse but without a book I do not know which fuse it was, or if the fuel pump has a fuse. So two questions Is there a fuse for the fuel pump, and if so, which one is it? And how else can you check if the pump is bad?

Thanks in advance.

John

It has a relay, and they are common for going out- the good news is you don't need to buy one to get going, just switch it in the relay box for one like it.

Also Ford has inertia switches, and it may have tripped. Always on the passenger side, sometimes on the right side and sometimes on the firewall, a push-button reset whenever you locate it, may be behind the carpet if equipped.

Edit- if the pump is going bad, you can sometimes slap the &*^%#@!! out of the bottom of the tank and "jump start" it if it is sticking. To test, I would check for 12V at the connector near the tank. If you have 12V and it isn't working its probably shot to hell.

Exactly what happened to me about 5 months ago when I came out of WinCo. Old Betsy just didn't want to start. Didn't have starting fluid with me, so I called someone to come over and take me home until I could do something about it. We came back the next day, and we called AAA to tow the truck to my place to fix it there. Well we knew it was fuel related because it would start with a spray of ether. When the tow driver came, he asked why it wouldn't start. We said fuel. He went inside and pushed the button on the inertia switch, had me crank her, and she started right up.

So try pushing the button. I think my switch was starting to go bad, but I just have the switch bypassed for now.

I was gone all day, but just got back, checked the switch and no change. Will check voltage at the pump tomarrow afternoon in the daylight.

which relay is the one for the pump, i see two mounted on the pasenger front fender, a green one and a brown one?

Thanks
John

Fixed it. It was the Green relay. Glad it was easy. My father-in-law was in town with his 87 ranger 4x4, so I stole one off his truck and plugged it in, and she started up. Thanks for all the help, now i have to go to the parts store to buy a new one.

John.
